Liam Rosenior has hailed Moises Caicedo as ‘one of the best defensive midfielders in the world’ ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League match against Manchester City on Sunday.

Caicedo is set to make his 100th Premier League appearance for Chelsea this weekend as City travel to Stamford Bridge.

The Ecuador international, who joined Chelsea in a £115 million deal from Brighton in 2023, has established himself as one of the leading midfielders in the Premier League.

‘For me, he’s one of the best defensive midfield players, if not the best defensive midfield player in world football,’ Rosenior said.

‘Because of his intelligence, his physicality, his technical quality, how he understands the game. He’s going to be huge for us on Sunday.’

Rosenior is also confident that Chelsea can beat City despite registering just one win in their last six Premier League matches.

‘Of course we can, we’re a very good team,’ Rosenior said.

‘We’ve gone through a difficult run, even though in that run we were punished for mistakes, there were good moments.

‘When I actually analysed the games that we’ve had, we’ve caused every team we’ve played against problems but haven’t had the results for that.

‘We need to make sure that we keep the back door shut. We need to not switch off. We need to not make mistakes because Manchester City will punish you. But I still want us to go out and play our game.’

Rosenior also confirmed that Enzo Fernandez will still not be available for the game against City this weekend despite issuing an apology to the club for his comments surrounding a potential move to Real Madrid.

‘I’ve had a really good conversation myself, I had three or four with Enzo. He’s apologised to me, he’s apologised to the club and we’ll deal with that after a massive game on Sunday,’ Rosenior said.

‘It’s a serious meeting about something very serious. Enzo, I said from every single step along this way… I’m not questioning Enzo’s character, I’m not questioning who he is as a person. I believe people make mistakes and you can’t overstep the punishment for the mistake. I think we’ve made a sanction, we made a decision, I made a decision, and what I want for Enzo is for him to come on here and have an outstanding career.

‘He won’t play on Sunday but hopefully after that he’ll be a massive part of the group moving forward.

‘There’s still a few hurdles that need to be overcome that I won’t go into but at the same time I want every player really, really focused now on a huge run.’
