Brax Technologies opened pre-orders this month for the Wink, a compact handset that measures roughly 85 by 75 by 10 millimeters without its keyboard and stretches to about 122 millimeters tall once the module clips on. A 4-inch OLED screen sits above a full physical QWERTY keyboard whose keys also sense finger swipes so you can scroll without covering the display. That keyboard section unclips entirely, leaving a shorter slab or accepting a larger battery module still in development.

The hardware is rather low-key, beginning with a MediaTek MT8875 processor constructed on a 4 nanometer process, paired with four Arm C1-Pro cores, four Arm C1-Nano cores, and a Mali-G625 graphics chip. That’s all supported by 8 gigabytes of memory and 128 gigabytes of storage, which can be expanded up to 1 terabyte via microSD. Expect global 5G and LTE bands, as well as Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, a USB-C connector, speakers, and the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. The phone’s back features a single 50-megapixel camera, but the front is camera-free, and you’ll need to unlock it with a PIN or password because there is no fingerprint reader. The battery capacity has not been disclosed, but the SIM tray does include a handy pull tab, making it simple to swap out the physical card or eSIM without the need for a flimsy ejector tool.

The phone runs BraxOS, an open-source Android variant that does not require a Google account, Play Services, trackers, adverts, or vendor analytics. They’ve promised software updates until 2032 and even made the source code available on GitHub. On the top edge, there’s a physical switch that allows you to turn off the mobile radios, microphones, camera, location, and different sensors all at once; simply flip it back to restore everything to normal. You also have additional options that allow you to limit your USB-C port to charging only or disable the accelerometer, gyroscope, and other sensors.

So, what happens when you try to call or send a message to another Brax device? It is end-to-end encrypted, and a data-only mode allows you to disable regular calls and texts while keeping mobile data available for your favorite internet calling and messaging apps. There are also a few wipe rules ready to go, with no account or network necessary. So, if you try to unlock the device too many times and get it wrong, or if you simply turn it off for a while or restart it, everything will be erased.

In terms of operating modes, you have two options: Omni, which maintains the full Android environment and allows most programs to install properly, and Zero, which reduces the device to calls, messages, encrypted chat, and optional navigation; however, switching modes will result in a factory reset. Most Android apps will run, but some that use Google’s integrity services may refuse to cooperate.

The price tag is a hefty $700, but the first wave of buyers can snag a unit for just $449 in full, presuming it comes out in July 2027. Alternatively, you can put down a $30 refundable deposit and purchase one of the second batch devices for $550, which will begin delivering in September 2027. Every purchase includes the keyboard, a USB-C cable, and a really sleek translucent casing.

In terms of carrier compatibility, they’ve covered hundreds of networks in dozens of countries, but they’re keeping the exact battery life, weight, and module options open until production. So, what is the appeal of the Wink? The real keys, a hardware kill switch, and a stripped-down software foundation give it a practical focus, making it great for folks who only want the essentials without all the normal background services cluttering things up.
