New footage appears to indicate Pedro Neto would have been aware he was already on a yellow card before he made the challenge that ultimately saw him sent off against Arsenal.

The Chelsea forward became the ninth Chelsea player to be given his marching orders in all competitions this season when he scythed down Gabriel Martinelli in the 70th minute.

While Neto could have had few complaints about his second caution, the former Wolves winger appeared to suggest he was unaware he had been booked just three minutes earlier.

Darren England had brandished a yellow card in the direction of Neto after he, along with several teammates, had protested the decision to allow Jurrien Timber’s matchwinning goal.

Replays showed England and the VAR team were fully justified in ignoring Robert Sanchez’s pleas and Neto went into the match official’s notebook for dissent.

A video published by Sky Sports on Monday appeared to show Neto in conversation with Reece James at the time the booking was awarded, but England held the card aloft long enough for the 25-year-old to have been aware of the decision.

Chelsea’s hopes of securing at least a point were scuppered by Neto’s lack of discipline.

Manager Liam Rosenior said: ‘It is disappointing for Pedro, but it’s not just him, as a group – me as a leader included – we have to take accountability for some of the decisions we are making in terms of our discipline.

‘You can fine players (for red cards) but it is not about the punishment. It is about finding the reason why.

‘I know our record is not great since the start of the season, and we have now had two in two games so there is something deep-lying that we need to get to the bottom of.

‘We need to do something for sure. We need to speak to the coaching staff and the players because it is not acceptable.

‘In the last two games we have caused our own issues, and if we don’t eradicate it, it is going to cost us.’

Skipper Reece James added: ‘We’ve spoken about it, it’s come up a number of times, every time it’s someone different, not the same player.

‘Internally we need to review and keep improving. It’s a problem, we are playing in the toughest league in the world, you play against top or bottom 11 v 11 it’s tough, 11 v 10 is even harder no matter who you are playing.

‘I have no doubt in the team and staff, it didn’t go our way today but we need to regroup and go again.’
