Valve’s Steam Machine Queue System Gives Buyers a Real Chance Against Bots

Buyers wanting to pick up a Steam Machine will suddenly find themselves digitally queuing before they can even make a reservation. Valve built this reservation queue after watching the Steam Controller sell out in minutes and show up on resale sites at huge markups. The new system changes the launch process from a frantic click race to an orderly wait that favors actual players.

To be included in the queue, accounts must have made at least one purchase on Steam before April 27, 2026, and be in good standing. A single Steam Machine can be reserved per account. When the person reaches the front of the queue, they receive an email notification. As long as they buy it within three days, everything is OK. If they are unable to complete it in time, the spot is passed on to the next person in line. This makes it far more difficult for bots and resellers to scoop up all of the stock before anybody else can get in on the fun, because speed is no longer the main factor determining who gets one.

Looking at the most recent Steam code update, four different variants are being tested. Two of them contain 512GB of storage, while the other two have 2TB. Each storage size is also available in versions with or without the new Steam Controller. This allows consumers to select the appropriate size of data storage to match which accessories. Or not. For the time being, costs and hardware specifications remain unknown, but it appears that they want to provide consumers with options that meet their budget and setup.

The queuing system is based on the lessons learnt from the Steam Controller’s launch earlier this month when it sold out quickly and was soon appearing on resale sites for four times the initial price. That’s when Valve implemented the reservation system to ensure that real consumers had an equal chance at the hardware. They are now doing the same thing with the Steam Machine, as they anticipate that even more people will be interested in one of these full gaming setups.

Pre-orders may become available at any time based on new database entries. Valve has already stated in its Year in Review that the Steam Machine, Steam Controller, and Steam Frame VR headset will be available this year. Early indications point to availability beginning summer 2026, but no precise date has been disclosed.
