Drone hunting is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Federal regulations have limited the number of new drone models that can enter the market, and the cost of decent gear continues to rise, but there is one solution that avoids all of the headache. The DJI Neo, priced at $139 (was $199), includes some very interesting capabilities.

One of the numerous features that sets the Neo apart is its remarkable lightness. Weighing only one thirty-five grams, it flies under the radar when it comes to registration, allowing you to avoid many of the headaches that come with purchasing a new drone. However, despite its small size, the Neo is still capable of shooting silky-smooth 4K video and 12 megapixel photos.

Getting started with the Neo is easy. You simply turn it on, tap the screen on your phone using the free app, and those propellers come to life, safely hidden away behind guards to keep both the drone and your fingers out of danger. Landing is just as straightforward; simply press the phone again, and the Neo will return to its starting point without hassle. There is no need for a flat area; you can launch on uneven grass or sand without worrying about it toppling over.

The Neo can be controlled simply using your phone, eliminating the need for a remote control. Simply wave your hand to begin recording, and it will follow you around like a puppy would, keeping your subject in the center of the frame. Want a quick video of a group at the park or a dramatic rewind from a solo hike? Done. If you desire greater range and control, you can add an optional remote later, but the phone app will suffice for most photos.

The Neo’s video stabilization is rock solid even in a light breeze, thanks to its level 4 wind resistance. The half-inch sensor produces fine detail suitable for a short social media post or light editing, and the colors appear as natural as the sunshine in which they were shot. Indoor and low-light images may exhibit some grain, but for the price, the outdoor results are consistently excellent.

Onboard storage (22GB) is adequate for a small drone like this, with enough space to hold a few clips before transferring them to a device. In terms of batteries, each charge lasts about eighteen minutes, which is plenty of time to do some scouting or document a backyard barbecue. Spare packs fit neatly in your jacket pocket and may be recharged on-the-go with a power bank. Many owners opt for the three-battery bundle since it allows them to continue flying without having to stop and recharge, which is a significant advantage.

Safety is a top priority here, as the enclosed blades allow you to fly near to people or obstacles without losing control. Automatic return to home activates when the signal fades or the battery begins to run low, so you don’t have to worry about losing control. In the real world, pilots describe seamless handling that actually helps you improve your skills rather than overwhelming you with complex menus.

On the regulatory front, all of this ‘entry-level’ drone mayhem has made it more difficult to obtain some new imports, but the Neo has already cleared all of the hurdles and is still widely available. US flyers can still get one today, register it if necessary, and fly it with no problems, which is significant in a world where other entry-level options either cost a small sum or produce choppy footage.
