Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil (2026) Movie Gets First Trailer

Zach Cregger had been playing Resident Evil games for years before he considered directing a cinematic version, and it was that deep familiarity that drew him into the franchise following his recent work on Weapons. He collaborated with Shay Hatten to create an original storyline that fit well into the insanity of Resident Evil 2.
Bryan is a medical courier, and Austin Abrams adds a grounded intensity to the role, similar to his performance in Weapons. So when his routine delivery run into Raccoon metropolis goes wrong and turns into a one-night battle for survival, you get this really plausible reaction from him, a guy with a handgun and a vague sense of direction trying to navigate his way through a metropolis overrun with all kinds of infected monsters. On the move, he is learning to make every bullet and bandage count.

Cregger made a conscious decision to keep Bryan far away from the known Resident Evil heroes, since Leon Kennedy is unaffected, so we’re not treading on familiar territory. He’s just an ordinary guy who’s been thrown into the center of an outbreak, and like most of us, he misses shots, screams out loud, and scrambles for shelter just like the player would when the lights go out and something starts making a noise.

The film’s pace is driven by resource management, as Bryan picks up additional gear throughout the night, progressing from his first handgun to a shotgun and, eventually, an MP5. Then there are the healing supplies, which include green plants and sprays that long-time players will recognize immediately, exactly as in Resident Evil 4. Bryan’s decisions on when to fire and when to leg replicate the painstaking choices that marked the original games.

Cregger’s inspiration came directly from the heart of Resident Evil 2, as the goal was to make the film feel like the first time someone booted up the game and crept ahead into the near-darkness with a flashlight in hand. The T-virus remains the cause of all horror, as he stays true to the essentials rather than delving into anything supernatural.

Supporting players, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, all join Abrams in the ensemble, and their characters cross Bryan’s path at various moments, adding a layer of human tension to the mix alongside the monster threats. Sony has scheduled September 18 as the release date for Columbia Pictures, Constantin Film, and TriStar Pictures, following the successful completion of production.

Cregger stated early on that the games felt organically cinematic, and he has taken that sense into the film so that even fans of the series would understand where the influence is coming from without having to spell it out. The end result is a film that stands out from previous live-action adaptations by retaining the patient pacing and purposeful anxiety that made the games so memorable.
