Streetball Tournaments Make a Bold Return in NBA The Run

Gamers who have spent years glued to old arcade cabinets or their living room floors, feverishly wanting to achieve that perfect dunk will understand why NBA The Run needs to exist. This game is set for release on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam in June 2026, featuring fast-paced three-on-three play and short knockout competitions on courts all around the world.
Play by Play Studios is the company behind this first game, and it consists of a small but experienced group of independent developers who have all come from larger sports game businesses and grew up during the classic basketball video game era. They collaborated extensively with the NBA and the NBPA to ensure the game featured as many real players as possible while maintaining the sense of a pickup game. The contests take place in four-round knockout brackets known as the Run the World Tournament. Each round introduces new rules in the middle of the game, making things even more unpredictable. Wins earn you trophies, which let you accumulate Cred, an in-game currency, and unlock the in-game shop, where you may purchase additional cosmetics and improvements. It’s all about keeping each session brief and sharp so that every contest feels immediate and genuine.

Momentum increases when you make a major play, which unlocks the In the Zone system. Once you’re in the zone, each character gains a unique skill that can drastically alter the course of the game. One option allows you to blast through a defender for a massive, thunderous slam at the basket, while another renders you practically unusable on defense by blocking all scoring lanes. Timing these spurts can elevate what would otherwise be an average game to something very remarkable.
A roster of over thirty current NBA stars and five original streetball legends is available to play, each with their own set of strengths and weaknesses that will have a significant impact on how teams come together and compete. Fans may also obtain a rookie version of several of the all-star players, which includes period-appropriate attire and somewhat different qualities that affect how they play. You might even wind up playing as Bobbito Garcia, the guy everyone knows from the commentary booth, because his handles are so difficult to beat.

At launch, there are three primary modes to accommodate any type of play style. Knockout Squads allows you to establish teams of three, with one real person on each team, and then fill out the rest with pals, or you can match up against others, which is very useful when you only have one or two people to play with. Knockout Solos then allows individual players to create and direct their own trio against other online opponents. Knockout Friends allows you to transform your private lobbies into pretty flexible tournaments that may handle up to 48 invited participants, or you can simply play against the machine for practice or a casual night.

True rollback netcode ensures that online matches remain tight and responsive even with the weakest of connections. Crossovers, dunks for loose rebounds, and alley-oops all line up precisely on screen. Community input prompted us to implement some beneficial enhancements, like a dedicated Shootaround mode for warm-ups, some amazing advanced dunk animations, and insults proposed by users. One of the courts we added resulted from a fan poll.

The progression system remains enjoyable without ever becoming overbearing. You gain all sorts of cred for making it to the later stages of tournaments, and that cred can be used to buy anything from throwback jerseys to badges and banners, as well as some special rookie cards for your players. The shop rewards frequent players while also allowing you to seek out the products you truly desire. On May 1st, 2026, a closed beta will begin on Steam, allowing those who are truly interested in the game to test the netcode and mechanics for themselves.
