CSIRO Quantum Battery Breakthrough
Australian researchers have built the world’s first quantum battery that completes every part of an energy cycle from start to finish. Dr. James Quach was the main force behind this at CSIRO, and he collaborated with colleagues at RMIT University and the University of Melbourne to complete the research. Behind the scenes, engineers shaped the battery as a multi-layered organic microcavity and sent a laser beam across open space to add energy wirelessly.

It is quantum magic that allows the entire system to absorb all of that light at once, thanks to the way its components communicate with one another. The more cells you add, the faster everything fills up, rather than the other way around. Testing revealed that this object charges in femtoseconds and stores energy for a nanosecond or two, which is around a million times longer than the charging bit. The prototype’s real energy storage is merely a few billion electron volts, or roughly 1 in 200,000th of the energy of a flying mosquito.

The good news is that everything functions just fine at room temperature, which is quite useful for everyday lab work. Using some super-duper sophisticated spectroscopy, the entire process was checked from beginning to end. Traditional batteries rely on chemical reactions and get slower as they grow in size. Quantum batteries work in the reverse way: the more bits you add, the faster they move.

Dr. James Quach believes that all of this demonstrates that bigger is better in terms of the basic quantum phenomenon that causes larger batteries to charge faster. For him, it’s obvious that electric cars can be charged quickly, like a fast stop at the pump, and that electronics can receive all of the power they require from a distance. Drones will be able to stay airborne while being recharged by a laser, and small devices could simply run on these quick energy bursts. For the time being, however, the battery’s capacity is limited, and the energy storage falls far short of what is required for a commercial product.

According to researchers, the primary aim is to speed up storage time. If that is successful, this technology will be much closer to becoming usable. Each step ahead creates new possibilities for delivering power on whole new timescales.
