Owen Hargreaves names Cole Palmer alternative Man Utd must sign this summer | Football

Owen Hargreaves has urged Manchester United to consider a move for Morgan Rodgers to complete their midfield revamp this summer.

With midfield an area of the pitch long-neglected at Old Trafford, another rebuild is required at the end of the season with Casemiro set to depart when his contract expires.

With doubts also Manuel Ugarte’s future, United could be in the market for at least two central midfielders with Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Sandro Tonali all targets.

Bruno Fernandes has been in sensational form this season, returning to his favoured no10 role under Michael Carrick.

The captain was the subject of a huge offer from Al-Hilal last summer, revealing in December he felt United ‘wanted me to go’ before eventually committing to another season in Manchester.

There is expected to be more interest in Fernandes at the end of the current campaign and whether it is this summer or further down the line, United will need a replacement.

Former United star Hargreaves is keen to seen United rebuild their midfield with English talent with Nottingham Forest star Anderson his preferred choice in midfield.

Cole Palmer has been linked with a return to Manchester but Hargreaves believes United should also strongly consider a move for Aston Villa star Rodgers.

‘If you’re United, they had England’s midfield and they have gone away from that,’ Hargreaves told TNT Sports.

‘They have got Kobbie. Casemiro is leaving. With Bruno, who knows how long he’ll be there but if you are squad planning, you want England’s future midfield.

‘So you have Kobbie, Elliot and I would go try and get Morgan Rogers or Cole Palmer, that’s who I would throw the kitchen sink at.

‘They have a good nucleus but with Casemiro leaving, you need a defensive [midfielder] and you need a 10. But if you had Elliot, Kobbie and Morgan Rogers of Cole Palmer, you are okay for a while.’

United face intense competition for Anderson with Manchester City and Arsenal also weighing up moves.
