Sony Pushes PlayStation 5 Prices Higher Across the Globe

Sony announced a price increase on its existing PlayStation 5 hardware lineup this morning. As of April 2nd, the normal PS5 disc edition in the United States will cost $649.99, while the digital-only version will cost $599.99. The big boys, the PS5 Pro, will be $899.99, while the portable PlayStation Portal remote player will cost up to $249.99. The PS5 disc will cost £569.99 in the UK, the digital edition £519.99, the Pro £789.99, and the Portal £219.99. Over in Europe, the disc variant will cost €649.99, the digital edition €599.99, the Pro €899.99, and the Portal €249.99. In Japan, the PS5 will cost ¥97,980 on disc, ¥89,980 on digital, ¥137,980 on Pro, and ¥39,980 for Portal.
These new prices are significant increases over what we’ve seen recently, with the base PS5 going up by over $100 in the United States and similar percentage adjustments occurring elsewhere. Isabelle Tomatis, Sony’s VP of worldwide marketing, stated that the choice to raise pricing was not simple, but the business determined that it was worth it to continue providing gamers with the gaming experiences they want. She understands that such changes can have a significant impact on the community, therefore she stated that after careful consideration, they determined that it was the appropriate thing to do.

The timing leaves little room to breathe, with the new prices kicking in just days after the announcement. Anyone sitting on the fence about an upgrade or a first time purchase now has a very short window to act before the cost goes up. Sony has attributed the increases to broader economic pressures that are squeezing hardware costs across the industry.
Analysts argue that all of these price increases are gradually shifting premium gaming towards those with larger budgets. According to Mat Piscatella of Circana, a large portion of the gaming market’s growth is driven by people who can afford to spend money on the latest and greatest. Meanwhile, folks with lower earnings are forced to cut back. It’s causing many long-time fans to wonder how long they’ll be able to keep up with the escalating expense of getting into new games and accessing the internet.
