United’s Relax Row Gives Economy Travelers a Couch on Long International Flights

Anyone who has spent eight or more hours wedged into an economy seat over the middle of the Atlantic knows exactly how the second half of that flight feels. The legs start to protest, sleep refuses to come, and the hours stretch out in a way that no amount of in-flight entertainment can fully fix. United Airlines is taking a swing at that problem with the new Relax Row, and it might just be the most welcome change to economy class in years.

It looks like a standard row of three economy seats at first glance, but each one comes fitted with an adjustable leg rest. Once the plane levels off at cruising altitude, flip them up and they lock into place, creating a flat surface that runs the full length of the row. Add the custom mattress pad that comes with it and you have something that genuinely resembles a place you might actually want to sleep.

Other airlines have flirted with similar concepts before without much follow through, but United is committing to this in a meaningful way. More than 200 of its 787 and 777 aircraft are set to receive the upgrade by the end of the decade, with each plane getting up to 12 Relax Rows. The first retrofitted flights are expected to begin showing up in 2027, so the wait is not as long as you might expect.

Booking a Relax Row comes with a few thoughtful extras to go along with it. A custom fitted mattress pad, a soft blanket, and two additional pillows are included to help you actually get comfortable. Families traveling with young children also receive a dedicated kit packed with activities including a book, a slide puzzle, a sensory strip, and a soft teddy bear, which should take the edge off even the longest of flights.

United is framing the Relax Row as part of a broader push to make long haul economy travel genuinely more bearable, and chief commercial officer Andrew Nocella has been straightforward about the thinking behind it, acknowledging that passengers in economy on international flights deserve something better. United holds exclusive rights to the design in North America, which means no other carrier on this side of the Atlantic can offer the same thing. Pricing has not been announced yet, but United says details will come closer to the launch date, with booking expected to work through the standard seat selection process once the rows start appearing on eligible flights.
