What Scotland, Ireland and France need to do to win the Six Nations today

The Six Nations will come to a thrilling conclusion on Saturday, with three teams still in the hunt to claim the title.

France appeared to be in pole position to retain their title, but their shock 50-40 defeat to Scotland at Murrayfield means they still have work to do on the final weekend.

The manner of Scotland’s win also means that Gregor Townsend’s side have a shot at winning the title for the first time since its expansion in 2000.

Ireland are firmly in the mix, too, and will fancy their chances of getting a positive result against Scotland in Dublin, having beaten their visitors in their last 11 meetings.

So, ahead of the final round of fixtures, what does each team need to win the title?

France have two big advantages heading into the final round of fixtures.

Fabien Galthie’s side play last, meaning they will know exactly what they need to do to defend their title.

And in addition, they have a vastly superior points difference to Ireland and Scotland (+79, compared to +21 for Scotland and +16 for Ireland).

As a result, a bonus-point victory against England will be enough to guarantee them the title regardless of what Scotland or Ireland do in their match earlier on Saturday.

And should Ireland beat Scotland at the Aviva Stadium, then any win – bonus-point or not – will be enough for the defending champions.

How Scotland can win the Six Nations

Scotland’s quest to upset the odds and win the Six Nations will likely require them to record an impressive bonus-point victory against Ireland in Dublin.

If they do that, and France fail to do the same against England, then Townsend’s side will be lifting the trophy come the end of Saturday.

But a win without a bonus point for Scotland would mean they would need a helping hand from England, and for Steve Bortwick’s side to upset the French away from home.

Should France and Scotland both lose, Scotland could still emerge tournament winners, but they would have to get two points whilst also denying Ireland a bonus point and maintaining their points-difference advantage.
