Inventec VeilBook is a Laptop That Finally Gives the Keyboard Room to Breathe

Slim laptops, as expected, promise the world in terms of portability, but all too frequently they sacrifice something important in the process, namely consistent performance. Heat accumulates in these little chassis faster than you’d expect, and the fans have to spin faster to compensate, all before the processor has a chance to throttle back at the worst possible time. Inventec chose to tackle this issue front on with the VeilBook, a 14-inch prototype laptop that manages to stay under 10 millimeters thick while providing adequate cooling and typing comfort.

The keyboard is at the heart of the design since it is not only detachable and repositionable, but it also slides forward to cover the touchpad and palm rest area, leaving enough of room underneath for the cooling fans and vents. That’s the essential, since when nothing gets in the way of airflow, everything runs much cooler and stays at peak performance for longer. If touch input is required, simply slide the keyboard back and the touchpad is ready to go. It only takes a few seconds and feels meaningful, like you’re modifying some tool to meet the job at hand..

This design was created after thorough observation of how people use computers in real life. Most people spend a lot of time tapping away without using the touchpad, which is where this design really excels. Hybrid workers, in particular, may be penning emails, revising documents, or coding away while ignoring the touchpad entirely. Having it covered costs nothing in these situations, and they’ve even smuggled in a few more shortcuts on the surface of the touchpad so that popular commands are always available without having to remove your fingers off the home row. Even power management is meant to fit with these tendencies, reducing consumption when it detects extended typing sessions and then increasing it when you actually need it.

Its build quality most certainly lives up to all of this forward thinking, since the entire chassis is less than a centimeter thick, and the laptop is incredibly light and easy to transport. The 14-inch monitor provides ample workspace without adding unnecessary bulk, which is exactly what Inventec intended with this concept. Mobile professionals, in particular (and they appear to be the target market here), typically travel between home offices, cafes, and desks without worrying about carrying an extra cooling pad or dealing with the continual fear of overheating.

The Veilbook quickly gained notoriety, winning an iF Design award for its unique take on the ultra-thin laptop. The judges went on to highlight how it reimagines user patterns to address the age-old challenge of hardware performance. Still, all of this is merely a concept at this point, as Inventec spends the majority of its time manufacturing gear for other firms rather than selling it directly to consumers. As of yet, no OEM manufacturer (ASUS, Acer, etc.) has said if they would be producing the VeilBook, and all specifics on the internal features, processor family, RAM capacity, and battery life remain unclear in terms of public information.
