BMW’s latest i3 prototype has been spied in a teaser video, being tested on icy lakes and winter roads near the Arctic Circle in Arjeplog, Sweden. As the sedan receives final dynamic changes ahead of its big unveiling on March 18th, 2026, the clip reveals a car that is completely at home on ice. It accelerates quickly, carves through corners with finesse, and comes to a stop with no drama.



They call it the “Heart of Joy” because it is the brain behind the entire operation, combining the powertrain with the brakes, steering, and energy recovery in a super-fast system that makes decisions much faster than previous electric BMWs. On low-grip terrain, it delivers just the correct amount of power to each wheel, keeping the car steady through sharp turns and recovering energy rapidly without unsettling everything. especially when the driver pushes it to the maximum and then some more, it provides a silky smooth, predictable ride, especially when stability control is turned off.

Under the hood of the tested 50 xDrive model is a pair of motors working together in all-wheel drive. That results in a reasonable 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the sixth-generation e-drive technology has an 800-volt system that allows for 400kW charging, which means you can add almost 230 miles of range in just 10 minutes at a suitable station. With a 108kwh battery pack on board, you may expect a WLTP range of up to 500 miles while driving efficiently. Of course, the car’s clean aerodynamic form may help it get a few extra miles, particularly when compared to the iX3 SUV.


The exterior is getting much clearer in these recent prototypes, and even though they are still camouflaged, the production headlights are just beginning to shine through – and they are looking rather sharp, with these slim diagonal LED elements giving the car a sleek futuristic appearance. The grille is a very beautiful touch; when you turn on the lights, it all lights up like a luminous pattern, rather than a boring old hole. The bodywork features the sleek clean lines that you’d expect from a BMW, but with a more basic approach this time around, focusing on efficiency and making a statement.

Inside, it’s all about keeping things simple, and they’ve gone with a panoramic display that shows all of the vital information at the bottom of the windscreen, eliminating the need for a separate instrument cluster. The majority of the controls are on a large central touchscreen that is slightly oriented towards the driver, allowing you to see what you’re doing. What about the old iDrive controller? Long gone, replaced by a sleek new method of doing things. The interiors of the test cars appear dull, but they have all been wrapped in fabric to keep the final materials hidden until the big reveal.
