Irena Kandaurov’s Smooth Yacht Concept Hides Two Sky-Facing Pools on a Short Hull

Irena Kandaurov’s latest concept arrives as a set of renderings that refuse the usual yacht shopping list. Guests scanning the hull for a helipad, a beach club, or a glass wheelhouse will come up empty. What sits in their place is a low, continuous shell with long flowing lines, two open decks, and a pool on each of them.

Both pools provide a clear view of the sky, including the one on the lower deck. That is only possible if a section of the top floor is slid open sideways, resulting in a vertical gap while the rest of the structure continues to sustain the weight of the entire structure. Lounge chairs are situated directly close to each pool. Another level below the waterline is most likely present, but the concept picture does not provide a clear perspective of it, as the inside of the cabins, dining area, and any potential internal salon remain covered. To be honest, at this point, the outside design is the most crucial.

One artist believes the design was inspired by Zaha Hadid Architects’ Mothership, a giant 140-yard lattice ship that resembles coral rather than a traditional boat hull. Kandaurov’s vessel is substantially smaller in scale than that one, so much so that the description describes it as a day boat rather than a real ocean-crossing yacht. The boat’s shell is a long gray paneled structure, but there are no solar panels visible, despite the fact that it would be the natural location for them if someone built on this design.

There is no helm station portrayed in the illustrations, which leads to a lot of guesswork. According to the designer, the absent wheelhouse could indicate that this boat is designed to operate without a crew, using current technology and software to cruise coasts and bays, and powered by electricity charged at a port or mother ship. In that instance, the boat’s speed would be maintained low so that the journey became the major event. However, none of this propulsion gear appears in the renders, which just show the shell, two pools, and the sky above.

Of course, if this concept were to be built, the logistics of the cabins, cooking, and personnel must be worked out, as well as how the cantilevered decks over the pool would hold up when there is actual weight and water in the pools. Kandaurov’s drawings do not attempt to address those problems; instead, they depict a short, clean hull with only the two pools and the open sky, leaving it up to the rest of the yacht industry to decide whether that is sufficient.
