Caterpillar Rolls Out a Pickup That Brings Jobsite Tech to the Driver’s Seat

For decades, Caterpillar has been developing heavy machinery capable of moving large amounts of earth and changing the appearance of cities. Now they’re focusing on something smaller but still massive: a pickup truck. At the CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026 exhibition in Las Vegas, the company debuted a Cat Truck prototype, a one-of-a-kind custom designed to answer all of the years of rumors and speculation about a Caterpillar pickup, but it came out in a shape that most people were unlikely to predict.

The Cat Truck is essentially a Ford Super Duty F-450 with the same 6.7 liter Power Stroke High-Output V8 diesel engine, but Caterpillar has slathered on its own branding, with giant CAT logos all over the place, yellow accents, and a hefty body kit reminiscent of their heavy industrial gear. The Ford emblem remains on the infotainment screen, serving as a reminder that this is based on a Ford rather than a whole Caterpillar build from the ground up. The focus has been on incorporating Caterpillar’s current safety measures and technology to transform this truck into a mobile command center for construction sites.

Safety systems are top of the agenda here, with the Detect Camera system using sensors to detect persons approaching too close to operating machinery and sending out an alert in the hopes of preventing an accident. The Driver Safety System monitors the driver’s weariness and the status of connected equipment on-site. Both of these are direct results of Caterpillar’s experience designing heavy machinery, where awareness can mean the difference between a successful day and a disaster.

The dashboard includes an integrated display center that combines the CAT AI Assistant, VisionLink Productivity monitoring, and safety features into a single package. Drivers can see how projects are progressing in real time, what condition their equipment is in, and where team members are on site all from one interface. It is meant to allow one person in the cab to monitor all of the many components of a site without having to continually radio in or manually check things.

Then there’s an autonomous drone launch station on the roof. Drones can be sent off to inspect the terrain, map progress, or deliver small parts to workers in difficult-to-reach locations. This can help you reduce idle time to zero and get things done when access is limited. Caterpillar appears to actually regard this as a practical step toward making construction work more efficient, rather than merely a fancy technological feature.

For the time being, production is still considered “off the table.” The Cat Truck serves mostly as a display. The major payoff comes from the components that can be added to current automobiles. Dealers may now equip their existing trucks with features such as the Detect system, fatigue tracking, AI assistant, and productivity tools. This implies that clients who already have a capable pickup truck can gain access to high-quality Caterpillar technology without having to purchase a completely new rig.
