You could put $332,000 toward a house in many American cities. Or you could buy the fully equipped Winnebago ARKA 20Z and take that money straight into the backcountry. Winnebago built this machine on a Ram 5500 crew-cab chassis powered by a 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel. The engine makes 360 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic.

Crew-cab seating accommodates six people, all of whom are safely harnessed in with belts. The sleeping area is somewhat tiny, with a maximum capacity of four people. The whole length of the item is 26 feet 7 inches, the height is somewhat more than 11 feet 9 inches, and the width is the customary 8 feet. The interior headroom is adequate, measuring 6 feet 8 inches. The gross vehicle weight rating is a massive 19,500 pounds. With all of the extras, that figure rises to a total of 43,000 pounds. Unless absolutely necessary, do not purchase a trailer hitch with a weight capacity of 15,000 pounds.

Overland versions replace the standard dual rear wheels with a large single-rear-wheel modification using 41-inch tires. That includes a Buckstop winch-ready front bumper, some branch guards, an onboard air compressor, and a full-size spare on a swing-away carrier, just for fun. All of this is completed up with a four-point pillow-block system for mounting the living box. This allows the body and chassis to work independently over uneven terrain rather than battling like two kids in a squabble.

Inside, they’ve abandoned traditional wood cabinetry in favor of aluminum with lockable compression latches. The galley features solid-surface worktops and a stainless steel under-mount sink with split covers, which are somewhat fancy for a galley. A 1400 watt portable induction cooktop and a 6.2-cubic-foot 12-volt refrigerator with drawer freezer complete the package. Soft-close drawers prevent your stuff from being jostled, and a pantry with sliding doors keeps things neat and tidy on the trail. Two swivel tables can be positioned throughout the back lounge for added convenience.

If you want to sleep, the back lounge turns into a double bed, or it may be cleared completely to create a full-height, full-width heated gear garage. Van-style double doors swing open, allowing you to load bikes, tools, or even a small motorcycle into the rear. There are L-track rails certified at 500 pounds each, so you can secure your gear exactly where you want it. The cabover space in the front can be configured as twin, queen, or king beds. Add some optional overhead storage modules and a skylight, and you’ve got a fairly nice sleeping place.

The electricity is generated via a 48-volt design, which sounds like advanced technical language. However, you can get up to 16.8 kilowatt-hours of Lithionics lithium capacity, a 3600 watt inverter, and 800 watts of solar capacity to be added later. An auxiliary alternator charges the system while the truck is moving, which is highly convenient. Winnebago claims you can go off the grid for up to 14 days without using the air conditioner. A 60-gallon heated and insulated fresh-water tank is linked with a 40-gallon heated gray tank, and the Elwell Timberline hydronic system provides continuous hot water.

Climate control operates from negative 10 degrees Fahrenheit to a scorching 120 degrees. They have hydronic heating, heated floors and tanks, R-15 roof insulation, R-12 wall insulation, and a heat-recovery ventilation system. Two-inch walls feature various layers of fiberglass, Azdel, and foam to keep the cold air out and the heat in, and on top of that, there’s a one-piece molded fiberglass roof that sheds water like a charm and can withstand heavy snowfall.

The bathroom is nestled between the living area and the cab-over sleeper, creating your own small sanctuary. If you need some quiet time, a retractable privacy screen and a waterproof magnetic curtain can help you block out the rest of the world. The shower is quite ordinary, measuring 24 by 38 inches and standing 76 inches tall. It includes a foldable seat that also serves as a step into the bunk, making it ideal for getting up in the middle of the night. The toilet is a draw-out Thetford cassette type, which is pleasant and discreet when needed but out of the way the rest of the time. Then you have wardrobe storage and a vanity with power outlets all squeezed into the same space. Some people criticize the layout, claiming that you must pass past the shower to get to the bed…and that only some fabric separates toilet time from sleeping quarters. Others only see the pros; the layout allows you to fit a lot of living space into a small footprint.

Winnebago’s Connect system is impressive in that it displays all of your power levels, tank status, climate zones, door locks, and pitch-and-roll statistics on a 10-inch tablet or your phone. Even if you lose your cell service, you can still connect. You can even add optional Starlink prep or other satellite internet if you need to connect in really remote locations. Early testers emerged with purpose-built under-body protection, insulated external compartments that heat up automatically when temperatures fall below 45 degrees, and an underside as clean as a whistle.

It costs a whopping $331,901 before taxes, title, and all the bells and whistles. This may sound similar to a mortgage payment in many neighborhoods, but the difference is that you can drive this thing anywhere the dirt roads go. That makes a tremendous difference in my book. Pre-orders commenced following the ARKA’s debut at Overland Expo West in May 2026, and it joins the Revel and EKKO in Winnebago’s Backcountry series. Now the ARKA is the largest and most self-sufficient of the three.
