Apple AirPods with Cameras Leak Rumors
Apple left a short video sitting inside the latest macOS release candidate, and someone found it. The clip lasts only a few seconds. A man wears a pair of AirPods that look thicker than the current Pro model. He holds a book up in front of him. A calm Siri voice explains that Visual Intelligence can save what you see. Just ask, and the title of the book is logged for later.

MacRumors pulled that not-so-sneaky AirPods prototype demo from macOS Tahoe 26.7. Ironically, it provides the clearest glimpse yet at the long-rumored camera earbuds. Each AirPod has a tiny camera on it that provides rather blurry visual data to Siri so the assistant can get a sense of the space you’re in, but make no mistake, it’s not a camera system built for taking photos or recording video; its purpose is more similar to handing Siri a pair of eyes.

You could ask it to take a picture of a recipe you found on your kitchen counter or write down the name of a plant you observed on your walk, and if you find yourself in a new neighborhood, the same cameras may even assist you with directions. One software warning even says to keep your hair out of the way so you can see clearly. Looking closer at the design, the camera equipment is actually housed in those longer stems, and there’s even an LED that’s supposed to light up once visual data is transferred to the cloud, though it’s hard to see in the demo video.

By the way, you may recall that the codename B790 has been floating about for months now, and Mark Gurman from Bloomberg was only guessing about the cameras being like ‘eyes for Siri,’ but now we’ve just seen the idea working in a rather polished software release. This all fits in with the usual September iPhone event, when we expect to see a more capable version of Siri released alongside some new hardware, and these camera AirPods would be an excellent companion for that upgrade, allowing you to leave your phone in your pocket while still receiving useful context.

However, not long after the footage was released, privacy issues surfaced. Wearables like this have a reputation for recording softly, and putting them in your ears just adds to those concerns, but Apple’s method aims to reduce that danger. The cameras are rather low-resolution, they never save any video, and that LED light is supposed to flash up when information is shared, so they’re clearly trying to keep this feature focused on being useful rather than simply a big deal about spying.
