Project Swan Spreads Its Wings, Lenovo’s Next ThinkBook Grows Wider Instead of Taller

Lenovo keeps pushing laptop screens past their usual limits, and the latest leak points to a business machine that stretches sideways rather than upward. Exclusive images shared by WindowsLatest earlier this by month show a device internally known as Project Swan, clearly marked as a ThinkBook and aimed at productivity users rather than gamers.

Closed up, this laptop appears quite standard, with a simple webcam positioned at the top of the display bezel and two USB-C ports snuggled along the left side. The classic ThinkBook logo appears on the palm rest. Turn it around, and the true tale begins to unfold. A sleek dual-tone rear panel with cutouts on either side, and the Lenovo logo in the center. Those apertures conceal all of the ingenious engineering that makes this device work.

The cleverest feature is the flexible OLED screen, which contains extra display material wrapped up tightly inside housings on the left and right corners of the lid. When more room is required, motorized rails are used to extend the display horizontally from either side. To accommodate those rails, the hinge has been shortened and shifted to the center. On its own, this looks like any other ThinkBook, but when extended, it becomes a portable ultrawide workstation, ideal for working with side-by-side windows, long timelines, or many projects without the need for an additional monitor.

Lenovo has previously dabbled with this concept, as seen by the Legion Pro Rollable gaming laptop, which can expand its 16-inch display to 21.5 or 24 inches. Project Swan has taken that idea and incorporated it into their ThinkBook series, replacing the high-performance gear with a thinner, lighter business model. Lenovo already has a commercial version that operates the opposite way around: the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable, which begins as a 14-inch OLED and then unrolls to 16.7 inches, giving you a little more vertical real estate for documents, code, or long pages. Project Swan essentially flips that concept on its head; whereas Gen 6 was all about height, this one is about width.

Both of these concepts rely on the same fundamental technology: a flexible plastic OLED that can be rolled and unrolled without cracking. There has been little discussion of the technicalities, such as diagonal size, resolution, or aspect ratio. The processor, RAM, storage, and battery are likewise a mystery. The render does show Windows 11 operating with the Recall icon in the taskbar though, so we can anticipate the typical Microsoft AI goodies to be on board. Which is convenient, but there is no sign of the Copilot key.

Project Swan is still in pre-production, so no word on pricing, availability, or even the final name. Lenovo has a history of leaking designs before releasing working hardware a few weeks later. The Legion Pro Rollable and an early Thinkpad prototype both followed this pattern. Industry experts predict that Project Swan will appear at IFA in Berlin next month or at one of Lenovo’s Innovation World events around the same time.
