A German-built trailer that rolls behind a compact car by day and floats on calm lakes by night first rolled out more than a decade ago. Today the latest SEALANDER arrives with a fuller list of comfort options than any earlier version, ready for orders with deliveries that began in mid-2025. Daniel Straub’s idea took shape in the early 2010s and reached the market around 2014 as a lightweight hybrid of teardrop trailer and small motorboat.

The core concept is a single hand-laminated fiberglass hull that, regardless of whether the boat is moored at a campsite or drifting softly across a sheltered cove, remains sealed and dry almost every time. The most recent model adheres to this core concept while adding a slew of additional useful capabilities that transform the basic shell into a nearly comprehensive overnight base. The body is essentially a single-chambered, glass-fiber reinforced plastic monocoque that is double-walled and has a nice gel-coat finish that can withstand both salt and fresh water. The single axle frame is galvanized, and the weight is supported by oil bearings that keep moisture out.

The SEALANDER measures around 469 cm in length, 166 cm in width, and 193 cm in height. The weight without gear ranges from 530 to 700 kg, with a maximum of 750 kg. That essentially implies that most drivers in Europe can tow it with a basic Class B license without any additional paperwork or difficulty. You may drive the device at speeds of up to 100 km/h, and its small profile eliminates the need for special mirrors.

The SEALANDER can be lowered into the sea without the use of any additional ramps or equipment, as a slight slope or slipway is sufficient. Once the outboard motor is attached to the back and the support supports are installed, the boat is Category D CE and ready to go out on the water. They often recommend engines with 5 to 10 horsepower, but if you choose a smaller engine, you may get away with a speed of around 10 km/h or five knots, and you will not need a separate boat license in Germany. The draft is 47 cm, yet the hull only extends 27 cm below the surface. On the sea, you can carry 382 to 410 kg, which includes persons, gear, and fuel. In general, you should avoid Beaufort force 4 winds and waves greater than 0.3 m. This boat is designed for sheltered lakes, tranquil rivers, and protected coasts within one kilometer of the shore.

Inside, there are two benches on either side, and you can attach a retractable table to form a small eating space for up to six people. Those same benches then fold flat to form a bed for two adults and a small child. The panoramic tinted acrylic windows provide a 360-degree view, and the polyester folding top may be pulled back to open up the cabin to the sky. The interior trim is all mahogany veneer, with white molded fiberglass walls. The cushions are anthracite imitation leather with beige stitching, and the base kit includes RGB LED strips, recessed reading lights, stainless steel ventilation fans, and a complete set of curtains. On the power front, the yacht has a 12-volt 50 Ah lithium-iron-phosphate battery to keep things running, as well as 230-volt plugs, a 12-volt outlet, a shore power adapter, and an Anderson connector ready to attach a solar panel.

Buyers can now add a host of accessories that previous versions either didn’t offer…or only supplied in limited quantities. You’re now talking about a single-burner gas cooktop, a stainless steel sink with separate fresh and waste water tanks, an 18-liter compressor fridge (still as effective as a car fridge but with the added benefit of staying put), a Dometic toilet with a nice privacy curtain, and a removable outside shower board to rinse off after a swim, all of which combine to make the cabin a far more self-contained little house on wheels.

Then there’s the solar mat, which provides 200 watts of power, a battery upgrade to 100 amp hours, a marine-grade sound system from Fusion with external speakers so you can blast your tunes to the utmost, and a grill attachment on the side, which opens up a lot of possibilities. Not to mention alloy wheels, bespoke colors for the body and canopy, and a marine anchor set to keep you moored. The base price is 39,750 euros including German VAT, but the choices quickly add up, bringing the total to several thousand euros. Of course, you will need to purchase the outboard engine separately.
