A little black plastic rectangle rests in your hand and weighs roughly the same as a deck of cards. The Dumber Mini, which stands just over five inches tall and is no wider than two fingers, appears to have sprung directly from a 2005 Nokia catalog. Physical buttons form a full T9 keypad beneath a 2.8-inch IPS touchscreen with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. Twenty-one strong keys and side volume rockers give your thumbs something solid to press. No glass sandwich, no curved edges, just a simple candybar shape finished in plain black plastic.

Inside, a MediaTek MT6761 processor is combined with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. This phone, however, can manage two lines at once, thanks to dual nano-SIM slots that keep everything organized. The connectivity options include 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, and an NFC chip. An 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and flash is ideal for taking the occasional photo or even scanning a QR code. The 2-megapixel front-facing camera will record your video calls. The 2150mAh battery is modest in comparison to other smartphones, yet it still lasts most people a day and a half with mixed use. You may charge it with any modern USB-C cable, including USB-C to USB-C cables.

This phone gets its ‘Dumber’ label mostly from its software. Dumber OS is built on Android 14 and LineageOS 21, and it is entirely open source. There are two versions available: one with MicroG, which allows apps to interact with the Aurora Store, and one that is fully Google-free. Users may have waited to switch to the Google-free version, but they may now do so whenever they choose. The system includes an excellent app blocker that allows you to hide apps, prohibit new installs, and lock those settings with a PIN. Some owners even go so far as to configure it so that a factory reset is required to unlock the restrictions, which corresponds to the purposefully cramped screen. Scrolling thru social feeds or attempting to watch long movies can quickly become uncomfortable. Most people end up stopping.

WhatsApp, Signal, Google Maps, Organic Maps, Spotify, Apple Music, Uber, and several banking apps continue to function. Curve Pay and local banking apps that employ NFC allow you to conduct contactless payments. This phone can even serve as a mobile hotspot, hold boarding cards, and perform two-factor authentication. Furthermore, the proximity sensor does what it is supposed to do: it turns the screen off during calls, ensuring that your cheek does not end conversations by default. The physical volume keys are still easily accessible without having to open menus.

The build quality on this one has actually improved when compared to the prior Doov R77 Pro versions backed by the team. Keys seem much more even and consistent. The device feels better in the hand.
