Stolen Lives Teased in Marvel’s New Avengers: Doomsday Footage from D23

Marvel waited until a late Friday panel at D23 to put the latest look at Avengers: Doomsday in front of everyone. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell walked out with Kevin Feige to introduce it. What followed is a tight, two-minute special look that centers almost entirely on the man in the mask and the wreckage he seems to have left behind.

A city lies in ruins beneath a bleak sky, with buildings leaning and smoke still rising from the streets. Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal, stands in the center of the scene and screams out a single name. “Victor. Did you do this?” His voice conveys more than rage. It carries recognition, the tone of someone who has known him for a long time but yet can’t understand the extent of the damage.

Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm answers with a quiet history lesson. She describes Victor as the smartest person in any room he entered. She says he used to be different. He used to be kind. He used to be caring. Then everything he loved was taken from him. She knew he was lost. She did not realize he was broken. The words land over slow shots of Downey’s Doctor Doom seated on a throne, green energy pulsing around the base, the metal mask catching just enough light to show the eyes behind it.

Doom’s reply arrives like a verdict. “All of you have lived stolen lives, but now. you must give them back.” While he speaks, the trailer cuts between quiet, private moments. Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd, settles down with his daughter, a serene happiness on his face. In contrast, Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm is cradling some tiny tot, which appears to be Franklin Richards. Chris Evans is hovering nearby, holding a newborn securely in his arms. Chris Hemsworth has stopped by Love, looking like the world’s most menacing babysitter. Meanwhile, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto make brief but intense appearances, leaving the air dense with tension. Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Letitia Wright’s Shuri, and James Marsden’s Cyclops all pass past in a blur, with only a glimpse of each of them. The apparent message here is that these heroes have something to lose, and Doom has them right in his sights.

The special look concludes on a dark note, with a devastated cityscape, some meaningful moments between the families, and a villain who is dead serious about collecting the multiverse’s debts. There was no spectacular team shot or inspiring speech from the heroes. Just the overwhelming sensation of loss and hopelessness. This is the version of the film that first premiered at Comic-Con (remember that Hall H exclusive?), but now that it’s been cleaned up and made available to the public, we can finally see it in all of its gritty splendor. Let me tell you, this one has kept its focus sharp and mean. Reed and Sue are shown treating Victor as if he were an old acquaintance they had known.
