Nissan’s Qashqai e-Power Travels from Bogotá’s Heights to the Caribbean Coast on One Tank, Earns Guinness World Record

Nissan’s Qashqai e-Power has earned a Guinness World Records title for the longest journey completed by a non-plug-in extended-range electric vehicle SUV without external charging or refuelling. The compact SUV covered 1,980 kilometers, or about 1,230 miles, across Colombia between July 14 and 17, 2026.

Starting from a high point in Bogotá, around 2,600 meters above sea level, the vehicle steadily descended to the Caribbean coast. The course included city streets, remote country roads, severe mountain passes, and variable weather. With infinite long downhill parts, the system had lots of opportunities to recover energy thru regenerative braking, allowing each drop of fuel to travel a little further.

The entire run was powered by a single 55-liter tank, which is equivalent to 14.5 gallons.That gave us an average of nearly 102 miles per Imperial gallon, or approximately 85 miles per US gallon.The official WLTP rating for the newest Qashqai e-Power stated that it had a long range, but this real-world result blew that out of the water while still dealing with altitude variations, traffic, road conditions, and variable surfaces.

An electric motor provides all of the power to the wheels. A 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine cannot be connected to the drivetrain because it only functions as a generator, producing power and feeding it to a small 2.1-kilowatt-hour battery. The motor starts, and you’re off. The current version of the system combines the motor, generator, inverter, reducer, and increaser into a single compact 5-in-1 module. Regenerative braking and smart software management of engine start-up and shutdown reduce waste. Drivers enjoy the smooth, peaceful ride of an electric vehicle while also being able to fuel up at a regular gas station.

This run in Colombia is one of a series of long-distance e-Power demonstrations. Earlier runs in the United Kingdom and Australia, including Tasmania, demonstrated the system’s ability to handle significant mileage in ordinary conditions. This one has just pushed the bar even higher with independent verification and a certified Guinness World Record.

Richard Candler, Nissan’s head of family, product, and components strategy, emphasized the practical aspects of this outcome: the technology provides efficiency, refinement, and driving performance comparable to an electric vehicle, aimed squarely at what real customers require. He also stated that it aids Nissan’s quest toward full electrification by allowing many more people to reap the benefits without having to wait for better charging networks to emerge.
