Black, Red, and a Manual Shifter, the Cabin of the JAS Tensei NSX Restomod Steps Into View

Fresh images of the finished cabin for the JAS Tensei arrived this morning, and they confirm the car is nearly ready for its public debut. JAS Motorsport and Pininfarina released the definitive interior design of their limited restomod based on the first-generation Honda NSX, showing a driver-focused space finished in bold black and red with clear ties to the original car’s simple, purposeful layout.

Tensei literally means rebirth in Japanese, but for this project, it’s about reviving a meticulously picked 1990s NSX donor chassis. JAS, on the other hand, does not treat it as a museum piece, instead stripping it down and rebuilding the aluminum skeleton before enveloping it in a full carbon fiber body, all meticulously molded by Pininfarina’s staff. The new skin lengthens the wheelbase, widens the track, and lowers the stance while retaining the famous pop-up headlights and long, clean lines that made the original NSX so easily identifiable. Production will be restricted to 35 cars, and they will be hand crafted at JAS’s own atelier in Italy near Milan, with Pininfarina’s studio on hand for any additional customization you may require.

The power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6, and Judd Power in the UK disassembled the original NSX engine before rebuilding it with a billet crankshaft, forged pistons and rods, and six unique throttle bodies. Each unit is then rigorously tested on the dyno to ensure that it meets specifications, and the output is 420 horsepower with 350 Nm of torque. The drive to the rear wheels is via a six-speed manual gearbox, with no turbo boost, electric motors, or fancy paddle shifters, just a pure, unadulterated driving experience designed to put you in touch with the road.

The cabin images demonstrate how that principle continues inside, with the dashboard lying low in the cockpit, providing the driver a clear perspective of the road. A digital display has replaced the old analog gages in the instrument hood, and there’s a little touchscreen in the center console for controlling the climate and media, but that’s about as fancy as it gets, since the rest of the layout is clean. Black surfaces dominate the inside, but velvety crimson accents on the seats, steering wheel, and door panels add some contrast. Integrated sports seats, finely sculpted metal elements on the gear lever and door handles, and high-tech materials complete the design. JAS claims that buyers will have hundreds of material and color options to pick from.

Pininfarina’s designers describe the cabin as focusing on functional clarity and harmonious proportions, essentially attempting to maintain the original NSX concept of a car that connects the driver directly to the machine, but without cluttering things up with a bunch of unnecessary screens or fancy trim. The result is a little more raw and unpretentious than many modern supercars, such as a modern Civic Type R, and there’s a clear trace of racing DNA in the seat bolstering and metal finishes, yet it all feels quite lovely and unquestionably Italian.

Unit #001 will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show from October 12th to October 18th, when it will be shown alongside Honda’s own Prelude HRC Concept in the Ultimate Supercar Garage. Prices begin at €880,000 ($1,015,885).
