Boston Dynamics’ Spot Robot at Mariana Minerals Walks the Copper

Out near Moab in southeastern Utah, a yellow four-legged machine moves across the open ground of Copper One. It covers the pit, the heap leach pads, and the solvent extraction-electrowinning lines without a human beside it. Boston Dynamics built Spot for places like this. Mariana Minerals put it to work as part of a larger push to run the entire site with continuous data and fewer people walking into harm’s way.
Mariana Minerals claims to be the first mining firm to focus on software, which is a bold claim, but its Copper One facility is certainly pushing the envelope. Copper One extracts copper from sedimentary host bodies by grinding and spreading the ore on leach pads. The next thing you know, the copper has been transformed into a near-pure cathode, ready to ship to clients at a remarkable 99% purity. Meanwhile, life was far more difficult for the on-site operators. They’d spend hours traipsing up and down the factory looking for faults, inspecting gages, equipment, and conditions as they went, but Spot changed everything.

Spot is a game changer since it is a robot built to traverse the same routes that its human operators did on foot. Not only that, but it has a variety of sensors draped under its belly that collect data as it moves. We’re constantly discussing thermal, auditory, and visual readings, which feed into Mariana OS, the company’s in-house software platform.

Data just continues coming in; no more waiting for snapshots here. Cameras can detect overheating equipment, microphones can detect strange noises that indicate a pump or bearing is about to fail, and with cameras capturing gages and surface conditions, there is no need to stop and inspect them manually. Mariana OS does its magic, normalizing all of the feeds and sending them out alongside production and maintenance data. What you get is a completely different manner of doing things, a shift from ticking off chores one by one to being able to keep a close eye on everything from beginning to end.

Lukas Fahle, Mining Autonomy Lead at Mariana, first encountered Spot years earlier while working on lidar systems for underground mines during his PhD. He saw a platform that could carry sensors into places people preferred to avoid. At Copper One the first jobs focus on the plant inspections that used to eat operator time. “What we really hope to do is relieve those operators of these fairly tedious tasks and help them get more time back to do more value add tasks,” Fahle said.

Marco Da Silva, vice president and general manager for Spot at Boston Dynamics, described the robot as a mobile sensing platform designed for complex industrial settings. At Copper One it delivers consistent data in real time so operators move from occasional checks to continuous monitoring. That change improves both safety and reliability. Turner Caldwell, Mariana’s CEO, framed the larger goal: autonomy in mining and refining succeeds when every part of the operation stays connected, observable, and able to improve over time. Automating inspection data speeds response, strengthens compliance, and frees people for higher-value work.
