DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4P Camera Just Got Serious With Two Lenses and Cinema-Grade Range

DJI has spent years refining the idea of a camera that lives in your pocket yet shoots like something far larger. On July 30 the company opened global sales of the Osmo Pocket 4P outside China, and the new model arrives with the first dual-lens system the series has ever carried.

A single CMOS chip is in charge of the primary wide-angle view. This small chip provides an impressive 17 stops of dynamic range, a significant improvement over prior Pocket cameras, and saves all of that gorgeous data in a brand new 10-bit D-Log 2 profile. That means more than a billion colors are collected, allowing you to really go into post-production grading later. At the core of it all is a 20mm equivalent lens with a large f/2.0 aperture, ideal for capturing the bustle of city streets, interiors, or expansive landscapes. Right next to it is a second 60 mm equivalent lens with a large f/1.8 aperture. Optical zoom operates at 3x while digital zoom can double up to 12x, allowing you to capture a portrait or distant detail without experiencing the usual image drop that pure digital zoom causes.

The primary chip supports 4K video at 240 frames per second. That fast frame rate allows for 8X ultra-HD slow motion, while the image remains clear and detailed. There’s also a Slow Shutter Video option that allows you to extend exposure for some really cool light trails or motion blur, which is a terrific way to create ambiance when you don’t need super-sharp freeze-frame precision. Photos come out at a great 37 megapixels and can be edited afterward. Every still can also produce a small 1.5-second 4K clip, giving editors something new to work with in post.

A three-axis mechanical gimbal provides stabilization, as does the technology that has kept prior Pocket cameras steady during rough and tumble walking shots and fast bends. ActiveTrack 8.0 tracks almost anything, from people, vehicles, pets, and even strange forms, all the way to the end of the zoom range and maintains them firmly in frame. Don’t even get me started on the motions; simply holding up an open palm locks concentration down, draw a V, and you’ll be recording in no time! The 2 inch, 1000 nit screen is touch responsive, and it powers on the camera and begins capturing in one smooth action, ensuring that the first frame is never lost due to a lurching power button.

The battery can last for more than 210 minutes of continuous filming. Get the battery half-charged and you’ll be ready to go again in just 18 minutes, which is adequate for a long stretch of filming after a short rest. Transfer speeds over USB 3.1 can reach 800 MB/s, allowing large 4K files to leave the camera without the normal lag. You get about 100 GB of internal storage, and the body weighs only 230 grams, making it small enough to fit in a jacket pocket after the screen folds shut.

There are two finishes available: the standard black and a pearlescent white that will be released later. The base bundle costs £529 in the UK and around €599 across Europe. The Vlog combination bundle costs £605 or €689. It includes a wireless remote, fill light, mic set, tiny tripod, and a lot more. Your Canadian money will buy you the Vlog for $619 and the base model for $699. If you already have some of the Osmo attachments sitting around, such as the wonderful ND filters, black-mist glass, or battery handles, they simply clip on with no adapters required.
