Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 Brings the Chase Back to a City That No Longer Belongs to People

Prime Video spent the morning of Comic-Con’s Hall H panel confirming what fans have waited nearly a decade to hear. Blade Runner 2099 arrives November 25 with all eight episodes at once. The limited series picks up fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049 and drops viewers into a Los Angeles that has been rebuilt without human hands.

Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a fugitive who determines the only way to stop running is to transform into the thing that hunts her species. She takes the badge and gun of a Blade Runner for one final job. Michelle Yeoh portrays Olwen, a Replicant who has only a few days to live. The two are brought together and assigned to seek down a single runaway who possesses information capable of destroying the fragile peace that holds the city together.

Early footage from the teaser shows the familiar rainy neon canyons and spinner cars, yet the streets feel different. Replicants appear more settled. Humans look displaced. Cora delivers the line that lands hardest: “Replicants, they keep taking it all away. How much longer until we have nothing? Until we are nothing?” Olwen answers later with quiet certainty: “The old world forever fights to come back. Humans want what was taken from them. But it’s our time now.”

Silka Luisa serves as showrunner, and Ridley Scott returns as executive producer alongside the crew at Alcon Television Group, which has previously carried the franchise through 2049. The first two episodes of Shogun will be directed by Jonathan van Tulleken, who also directed the first season. The majority of the photography took place at Barrandov Studios in Prague, with some additional work done in Barcelona.

Dimitri Abold and Lewis Gribben are series regulars. Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke, and Maurizio Lombardi will all have recurring parts. The entire ensemble went onstage in Hall H this morning, together with Luisa and the Alcon producers, to unveil the first official look.

Everything about the endeavor follows the established laws of the world. Blade Runners are still retiring Replicants. The distinction between human and synthetic remains a crucial question. The new series simply moves the calendar forward and investigates what happens when the hunted outweigh the hunters and the city itself begins to answer to various proprietors. All eight episodes will be released globally on November 25 in over 240 countries and territories. The wait between 2049 and 2099 will end in four months.
