Tesla just confirmed the production Cybercab will carry a factory-installed Starlink V5 terminal built right into the vehicle. The announcement landed Monday through matching posts from Tesla and Starlink accounts, each showing a clean cutaway of the roof with the antenna clearly labeled alongside the usual cameras, GPS unit, and 5G hardware.

Starlink takes a step forward with its high-speed internet from space for the future of driverless vehicles, and Tesla is eager to join. The Cybercab’s interoperability with the Starlink V5 was all but confirmed when test cars with temporary satellite dishes appeared on Austin streets.

The new Starlink terminal is a game changer, as the V5 is a lightweight marvel, weighing only 2.4 pounds, less than half that of the previous generation, and requiring a fraction of the power to operate. The automotive hardware has been adjusted to save space by reducing the number of antenna parts. Its heat tolerance has also been increased, so it will be able to withstand Texas summers when the car’s roof may become quite hot. The previous Starlink dishes were created with fixed homes in mind, whereas this one is intended to withstand the rough and tumble journey of being inside a moving vehicle.

Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s head of AI, stepped in later that night to confirm that connectivity isn’t required to keep the vehicle safe. The onboard computer handles all of the perceptual and decision-making functions. The Starlink V5 is all about receiving navigation updates, customer service links, and letting the company to monitor its fleet remotely. It’s useful to have an alternate link to fall back on if you’re in an area with inconsistent local cellular coverage. The next morning, Elon Musk announced a nice little extra detail: passengers will be able to stream 4K video while on the go using the same antenna as their connection. This turns the V5 into a dual-purpose piece of technology that can keep both the car’s systems connected while also streaming your favorite shows.

It all fits in perfectly with where the Cybercab project is right now. Where the technology has already been deployed in a few Texas cities and even a small part of Miami, the places have excellent 5G coverage, so the satellite backup is unnecessary. When you take the Cybercab out on the road or in regions with poor reception, it truly shines. At that time, a constant high-bandwidth connection allows Tesla to collect all of the driving data it requires from the car and send it back to the servers far faster than cellular alone would allow.

Prototypes used external dishes because they were easier to install and replace during early testing, but when production begins, the V5 will be neatly hidden away inside the car’s roof structure, sleek and streamlined like the Cybercab was supposed to be. The automobile already has a backup 5G LTE connection, so the satellite link just offers a third way for the car to communicate with the outside world.
