Norwegian outfit Bodø/Glimt, who eliminated last season’s runners up Inter this week, will fancy their chances of staying in the competition up against Sporting CP.
Champions League last 16 draw winners and losers
While PSG were the most feared team in the competition last season, thrashing Inter 6-0 in the final last May, they have looked vulnerable in Europe this term.
Chelsea will have very fond memories from their last meeting with the French champions, humbling them in the Club World Cup final in New Jersey last July with Cole Palmer running the show.
City and Real Madrid meanwhile met in the play-off stage of the competition last season with Pep Guardiola’s crashing out after a 6-3 aggregate defeat.
Arsenal will be the happiest of the Premier League contingent. In addition to a favourable draw today, their route to the semi-final of the competition keeps them clear of the likes of PSG, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Man City and Bayern Munich.
Tottenham meanwhile have been dragged into a Premier League relegation battle where survival will surely be their top priority. They too have also landed on arguably the better side of the draw, but must first get past Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.
It will mark an early reunion for Conor Gallagher, who left the Spanish giants in January to join Spurs.
When will Champions League last 16 fixtures take place?
The first legs of the round of 16 matches will be played across the 9, 10 and 11 March with second legs to follow a week later.
When is the Champions League final?
The final of this year’s competition takes place in Budapest on 30 May.
