Atlas Steps into Soccer Training Ahead of the 2026 World Cup

Hyundai’s latest footage depicts Atlas, Boston Dynamics’ humanoid robot, standing in front of a big screen. It features video from prior World Cup matches. Atlas pays close attention to the players in motion before heading to the practice area once each segment is completed. The robot replicates the gestures it has just watched. Atlas is depicted in a single sequence shifting its weight and swinging a leg forward. When the ball makes contact with the floor, it glides cleanly over it. Basic drills are performed in quick succession, eventually strengthening coordination.

Later in the session, celebrations break out, with Atlas lifting its arms in a stance reminiscent of a goal-scorer’s strut. Immediately after, the robot drops to one knee and holds it for a few seconds, indicating how players will react to a nasty accident. These small touches come straight from a clip of match footage that the robot reviewed just a minute before. Hyundai claims this is Atlas’s first experience with soccer, and the video sets off a miniseries dubbed School of Football.

There are already plans in the works to bring Atlas and its four-legged friend Spot to the World Cup, and some are guessing whether Atlas will have a chance to kick off the proceedings. Hyundai hasn’t said what role the robot will serve yet, but soccer training appears to be part of their wider plan. We recently witnessed a video of Atlas hauling a big small fridge, weighing approximately 45 kilograms, and walking away with it as if it were a grocery bag. The robot maintained its balance perfectly, even setting the fridge down without dropping it. This simply goes to demonstrate how strong and in control it is. The soccer exercises are now putting that strength to the test in a different way, testing Atlas’ agility, reflexes, and quick thinking by forcing it to do a variety of complex plays on the pitch.

To be honest, soccer is one of the most difficult challenges a machine can confront. The continuous changes of direction, the sudden stops, the necessity to timing everything perfectly – these are the kinds of things that really test robots’ abilities. But Atlas is learning from the real thing, as in watching match footage and learning from it, rather than simply following a predetermined routine. You know what? It’s becoming more manageable. Hyundai and Boston Dynamics are eager to get Atlas into more scenarios, and manufacturing targets indicate that thousands of these things will be produced for factories and other applications in the future years. The soccer project is essentially a showcase for the technology, putting it on display for all to see and connecting it to one of the world’s largest athletic events.
