Huawei XPixel Headlights Have Built-in Projectors, Lets You Recreate Classic Drive-In Theater Experience

Car makers keep finding new jobs for the lights up front, and Huawei just handed them one of the most unexpected ones yet. The company’s latest XPixel system turns a pair of headlights into a full-color projector capable of throwing an entire movie onto a wall while the vehicle sits parked. No separate screen, no extra equipment, just the lights already built into the car.

Engineers worked with a platform that had been on the road in monochrome for the previous three years. The previous version handled precise beam shaping to keep drivers safe and provide help. They’ve now gone one step further, giving you control over red, green, and blue across a million pixels per headlamp. Each individual pixel may be illuminated, dimmed, or even changed color, and the entire system fits inside a very small three-part device that operates ordinary driving lights, adaptive beams, and now this unique projection feature all at once.

When the car comes to a stop, the system switches into ‘movie mode’ without the need for any additional equipment, and it can project a roughly 100-inch image onto a nearby wall or flat surface. The image is in full colour, which is adequate for displaying a typical movie, so the scenes appear natural rather than bleached out. During a recent tech conference in Beijing, Huawei had a setup that played entire video clips, live football matches, and basic games. One film projected a football game directly onto a white wall, while another sent animated arrows across the pavement to guide the motorist around a corner.

The same hardware is still operational when the vehicle is moving, and it performs a variety of valuable functions. It paints navigation cues straight into the road ahead, illuminates a virtual carpet that follows a lane’s curvature, and even uses distinct, colorful patterns to transmit signals to other cars or pedestrians. When it’s rainy or foggy, the lights can change their color temperature to help them stand out. All of this occurs with the projection capabilities, ensuring that the headlights never lose their original purpose.

The first automobile to receive the full-color XPixel treatment will be the next generation of the Aito M9, a new electric SUV that Huawei has been developing since 2023. Monochrome versions are already available in products such as the Stelato S9, and the business intends to expand this technology across its portfolio, including the Qijing GT7 and Luxeed V9. The beauty of it is that every new car comes with projector functions without having to clutter up the dashboard with additional equipment.
