Man Utd have Andre Onana problem as they look to offload flop | Football
Manchester United are keen to offload Andre Onana in the summer transfer window, but face an issue with selling the goalkeeper.
The 30-year-old joined the Red Devils in 2023 and racked up over 100 appearances over two seasons in the first team.
It was clear he had fallen down the pecking order at the start of this campaign, though, and has spent the season on loan at Trabzonspor.
In his absence Senne Lammens has quickly established himself as a reliable number one and looks set to be the Manchester United goalkeeper for years to come.
The Red Devils are now looking to sell Onana this summer but face an issue with the Cameroon international’s wages.
With Manchester United not in European competition this season, Onana’s wages dropped significantly, but as they return to the Champions League they will bounce back.
ESPN report that the wage increase over the summer, in line with the rest of the squad, could become an issue as the club looks to sell.
Last year the Mirror reported that Onana’s wages were £170,000-a-week but dropped to £120,000-a-week when Manchester United failed to qualify for European football at the end of the 2024/25 season.
There are sure to be interested parties in the former Inter goalkeeper, who only turned 30 last month, but with two years still to run on his Manchester United deal, he will have to be made a good offer to be tempted away from Old Trafford.
Despite solving their problem with finding a number one, it could be a busy summer when it comes to goalkeeper ins and outs at Manchester United.
Altay Bayindir is expected to leave in the next transfer window after making 17 appearances over three seasons at the club.
If the Red Devils can get rid of Onana and Bayindir then they will very likely bring in a new understudy to Lammens.
Reports have also suggested that Manchester United could offer a new contract to 40-year-old Tom Heaton, who has been third choice goalkeeper this season.
Earlier this year, Onana’s compatriot, former Chelsea and Newcastle midfielder Geremi, suggested the goalkeeper fancies his chances of returning to Old Trafford and reclaiming a place in the starting XI.
‘Listen, I know Andre very well and during his time at United there were a lot of things that were not right,’ Geremi told Telecom Asia.
‘It wasn’t just him. And believe me, with the arrival of Michael Carrick, things are looking good for everyone, including him.
‘He is clearly talented and his gifts are rare. The next thing is for him to go back there and fight for his spot.
‘Andre has always excelled when faced with a challenge. He thrives when he’s given a fair chance to prove himself.’
