Canon EOS R6 V Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera Reveal
Canon revealed the EOS R6 V today, and it arrives at exactly the right moment for people who film daily. This full-frame mirrorless body takes the solid sensor from the R6 III and shapes everything around video work, streaming, and quick social clips. The result feels purposeful rather than flashy, and once you start reading the specs, each choice makes the next one click into place.

The body is compact, measuring 142 x 83 x 80 millimeters and weighing 688 grams with the battery inside. Canon opted to remove the electronic viewfinder and mechanical shutter in order to reduce the camera’s size, and it appears that this decision paid handsomely. The flat top plate now lies flush against the gimbals, and the second tripod socket on the grip side allows you to mount it vertically without any additional gear. These two upgrades alone make this camera portable and suitable for vloggers and streamers.

A small internal fan at the heart of this innovative new design is engineered to function at three different speeds, allowing the camera to record super-sharp 4K at 60 frames per second for more than two hours at room temperature if the speed is turned all the way up. Open gate 7K at 30 frames per second continues to roll till the battery runs out. The fan is smartly constructed to generate minimal noise, and there’s a large side grille that lets air out, allowing you to shoot extended takes without the camera abruptly shutting down.

Canon RAW Light offers 7K open gate recording at up to 60 frames per second, clean 4K at 60 frames per second, and cropped 4K at 120 frames per second for extremely smooth slow motion. Lower resolutions go all the way up to 2K at 180 frames per second for even more spectacular footage. Canon Log 2 and Log 3 work alongside HLG to create HDR footage, and you can use waveform, zebra, and false-color tools immediately in the viewfinder when you press record. Dual card slots, one CFexpress Type B and one SD, allow you to make proxy recording or backup files without having to carry any additional equipment.

The rear screen extends out and folds forward, allowing you to utilize it as a true viewfinder. It’s 3 inches across and boasts 1.62 million dots, so it stays bright outside, and it’ll automatically switch to portrait mode when you turn the camera on its side. If you’ve used one of Canon’s consumer cameras, the touch controls will feel familiar, but there is also a dedicated colour button that allows you to switch between photo profiles with a single press. A tally indicator on the front indicates if the camera is rolling, and another record button on the body makes it easy to identify.

Autofocus is fairly stable, thanks to the same Dual Pixel CMOS system found in the R6 III, and it can track people, animals, and vehicles without issue. Even when the entire frame is full with action or the lighting changes quickly, the subject detection remains accurate. In-body stabilisation provides up to 8.5 stops of shaking reduction, which is really useful if you’re shooting handheld. You can still get good stills images because the 32.5 megapixel sensor can shoot at 40 frames per second with autofocus when using the electronic shutter. You have a native ISO range of 100 to 64,000, but you can go higher if necessary. However, this will never be confused for a specialized stills camera.

Canon has paired the camera with a brand new RF 20-50mm f/4 L IS USM Power Zoom lens. The new lens weighs less than a pound, which is a rather light weight given all of the technology packed inside. It provides six stops of optical stabilisation on its own, and it also has two Nano USM motors for silky smooth and silent zooming. You may adjust the zoom with the camera, pull out your phone and utilize the Canon Camera Connect app, or use a Bluetooth remote to take the image. However, if you ever find yourself wanting the manual feel of a physical zoom ring, a simple flick of a switch returns control to the lens. Its 20-50mm range is ideal for capturing the most of your vlogging needs while keeping the lens compact enough to leave on the camera all day without getting in the way.

The audio is consistent with the rest of the package. Full-size headphone and microphone ports are positioned on the side for convenient access, and the body may be paired with either Canon’s DM-E1D stereo mic or the TASCAM XLR adaptor, which provides four channel sound. When it comes to powering the device, USB-C is your best option, as it will also stream clear 4K at 60fps directly to your computer or phone without the need for an additional capture card. For those of you who utilize external recorders, full-size HDMI supports 7K RAW output.

In terms of pricing, the body is $2,499, but if you want the complete package, including the power-zoom lens combo, it’ll be $3,699, a $200 savings over buying the pieces separately. There is also a stop-motion animation firmware version available for $2,599, ideal for individuals that want such process in their lives. If you want to get your hands on one of these, you’re in luck: the first shipments are scheduled to arrive late June.
