Google announced its Googlebook laptops this morning as the next chapter in personal computing. These machines arrive later this fall from familiar names like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, and they mark a clear shift away from the old Chromebook formula while keeping many of the things people already like about simple, reliable devices.

A distinctive glow bar runs down the edge of each Googlebook, a slim light strip that captures the eye with a soft, dynamic color palette that complements the Google mood, but that’s only the beginning. It provides rapid visual feedback on system status, keeping you informed when you least expect it. So far, the sleek lines and premium materials appear to be of high quality, solid, and free of unnecessary bulk. So far, reports indicate that it weighs around 3 pounds and has a starting price north of $600, though particular configurations will not be revealed until closer to launch.

The real magic, however, happens with the software, as Googlebook is built on a beefed-up Android platform that essentially combines the best aspects of phone and laptop experiences. You can launch Android apps directly from the Google Play store, without any additional steps or fussy controls. Files from your attached Android phone appear in the laptop’s file browser, ready to view, search for, or drag into documents without the need to physically copy them.

At the center of it all is Gemini, and one of the new tools, Magic Pointer, is a game changer for this compact laptop. Wiggle the pointer over a date in an email, and it will automatically propose adding a calendar event. Hover over a few images, and Gemini will combine them into a single scene or compare them side by side. Select a chunk of text, and it will provide rapid adjustments or summaries without requiring you to switch to another program, all in the moment and without fuss.

Widgets operate similarly, with a simple prompt allowing Gemini to create custom panels that display real-time data from Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and other apps. Planning a trip? No issue; a single dashboard may display flight timings, hotel confirmations, and weather all at once, and because the system learns from your daily patterns, it keeps the information current without requiring you to refresh it continually.

Seamless phone connections extend deeper than ever, so deep that you can actually pin favorite phone apps, files or folders right alongside your local documents on the Googlebook screen. We’re talking about completing work on the big screen that you started on your phone, as if it were one big, happy ecosystem. Now we know Google has made it plain that Chromebooks and ChromeOS are still in the picture, as they are receiving updates and new models will be released. Googlebook is where they want to go with all of this. The emphasis remains on devices that seem like natural extensions of the phone in your pocket, but this time with some serious intelligence behind them.
