Wayne Rooney has encouraged Chelsea to bring Premier League icon Claude Makelele back to Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n

Chelsea are searching for a new manager after Liam Rosenior was sacked following a brief and dismal spell in charge.<\/p>\n

The Blues turned to Rosenior after Enzo Maresca\u2019s departure in January but the ex-Strasbourg boss only lasted 106 days before being axed.<\/p>\n

Under Rosenior, Chelsea won just 11 games out of 23 and suffered five successive Premier League defeats without scoring a goal, the club\u2019s worst run since 1912.<\/p>\n

Chelsea\u2019s poor run has seen them slip to eighth in the Premier League, ten points outside the Champions League places.<\/p>\n

The mood at Stamford Bridge at least improved on Sunday as Chelsea booked their place in the FA Cup final against Manchester City with a narrow win over Leeds United.<\/p>\n

Chelsea remain worryingly chaotic on and off the pitch, however, and Rooney believes the team would benefit from the return of club legend Makelele.<\/p>\n

Makelele established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in history during his time in west London, helping Chelsea win two Premier League titles either side of spells at Real Madrid and PSG.<\/p>\n

The French World Cup runner-up returned to Chelsea as a youth coach and technical mentor but left that role in 2023 by mutual consent. <\/p>\n

\u2018I played a charity game last year and Claude Makelele was there,\u2019 Rooney said on his BBC podcast. \u2018I absolutely loved it.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was the first time I\u2019ve been in his company and we sat down after the game and had a glass of wine, I absolutely loved him.<\/p>\n

\u2018I was thinking at the time, someone with his mentality and mindset, having him around the place would be great for Chelsea.\u2019<\/p>\n

Discussing Chelsea\u2019s issues following their FA Cup semi-final win over Leeds, Rooney added: \u2018I was watching the\u00a0game\u00a0and I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0think the Chelsea players seemed sad [about Rosenior\u2019s sacking], they almost seemed relieved.<\/p>\n

\u2018As a\u00a0player\u00a0you need to look at yourself.\u00a0Some of them downed tools, 100%. It was interesting as well to see some players back fit.<\/p>\n

\u2018If you go back to Chelsea when they\u00a0under\u00a0Lampard, Terry, Cech, Makelele, it\u00a0actually didn\u2019t\u00a0matter that much if the manager was sacked because\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0got a group of leaders who will lead on the pitch and lead by example.<\/p>\n

\u2018Groups of players like that run the football club, we had that at Manchester United, so the manager doesn\u2019t need to do much. That\u2019s where it\u2019s changed massively.\u2019<\/p>\n

Rooney praised Chelsea\u2019s appointment of Rosenior, who was one of his assistants during his time in charge of Derby County.<\/p>\n

Asked whether Rosenior will be \u2018regretting\u2019 his decision to take the Chelsea job, Rooney said: \u2018I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know, I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know.<\/p>\n

\u2018Liam\u2019s a confident person and\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0said many times, I think\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0a fantastic coach.<\/p>\n

\u2018He\u2019s\u00a0never been at a club of the pressure of\u00a0Chelsea\u00a0and he got put under a huge amount of pressure straightaway from the media and then the players.<\/p>\n

\u2018The players and the media quite quickly judged him and then he wasn\u2019t getting results so we all knew what was coming.\u2019<\/p>\n

Chelsea will look to build on their FA Cup semi-final win over Leeds when they return to Premier League action on Saturday against Nottingham Forest.<\/p>\n

The Blues then face defending Premier League champions Liverpool at Anfield before meeting Manchester City in the FA Cup final.<\/p>\n
