{"id":6609,"date":"2026-04-13T15:40:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T15:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news678.top\/?p=6609"},"modified":"2026-04-13T15:40:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T15:40:16","slug":"u-k-knife-attack-that-killed-3-girls-in-taylor-swift-themed-dance-class-could-have-been-prevented-inquiry-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news678.top\/?p=6609","title":{"rendered":"U.K. knife attack that killed 3 girls in Taylor Swift-themed dance class could have been prevented, inquiry finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><em>London \u2014\u00a0<\/em>Nearly two years after three young girls were stabbed to death in one of the most shocking acts of violence in recent British history, the head of a public inquiry into the attack said it &#8220;could have been, and should have been, prevented.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Six-year-old Bebe King, 7-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and 9-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar were killed on July 29, 2024, when 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana carried out a frenzied knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event in the town of <span class=\"link\">Southport<\/span>, in northwest  England. Ten other people were wounded in the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Sixteen additional people, many of them children, continue to live with serious psychological trauma.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/04\/13\/cf8dcf02-0e2c-408a-93a2-b87c01ab7e2b\/thumbnail\/620x413\/fc9ee132ecdf4f20dca87bfd59dfa95f\/gettyimages-2167194426.jpg#\" alt=\"A family looks at flowers and tributes for the three girls who died in a knife attack at a dance class in Southport, England, Aug. 23, 2024. \" height=\"413\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/04\/13\/cf8dcf02-0e2c-408a-93a2-b87c01ab7e2b\/thumbnail\/620x413\/fc9ee132ecdf4f20dca87bfd59dfa95f\/gettyimages-2167194426.jpg 1x, https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/04\/13\/cf8dcf02-0e2c-408a-93a2-b87c01ab7e2b\/thumbnail\/1240x826\/4d09192d81d1b4f58c367c93edb3c082\/gettyimages-2167194426.jpg 2x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">A family looks at flowers and tributes for the three girls who died in a knife attack at a dance class in Southport, England, Aug. 23, 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Paul Currie\/PA Images via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A day after the attack, with false rumors spreading on social media \u2014 and amplified by far-right figures \u2014 that Rudakubana was Muslim and had entered the U.K. crossing the English Channel on a small boat, violent disorder broke out in towns across the country.<\/p>\n<p>For six days, anti-immigration riots \u2014 which included racist attacks, arson and looting \u2014 swept the country, as Southport became a byword for tensions over immigration, integration and national identity in the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>By July 2025, a year after the unrest, police had made 1,840 arrests, with more than 1,100 charges brought.<\/p>\n<p>The inquiry, which heard evidence over nine weeks, was set up to examine how the teenager, who was known to multiple public agencies \u2014 including police, social services, education, and health care \u2014 was able to carry out the attack.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the inquest, Sir Adrian Fulford, wrote in his report, published Monday, that the attacker&#8217;s &#8220;trajectory towards grave violence was signposted repeatedly and unambiguously&#8221; but that agencies failed to act &#8220;with the cohesion, urgency or clarity required.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He accused institutions of &#8220;repeatedly passing the risk to others and closing or downgrading their own involvement,&#8221; adding: &#8220;This failure lies at the heart of why [Rudakubana] was able to mount the attack, despite so many warning signs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This attack could have been \u2014 and should have been \u2014 prevented,&#8221; he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the inquiry&#8217;s finding &#8220;harrowing&#8221; Monday and has promised to make &#8220;fundamental changes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;No risk to others&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>From as early as 2019, Rudakubana \u2014 who was born in Cardiff, Wales, to Rwandan parents \u2014 was in and out of contact with authorities. He was referred multiple times to Prevent, the U.K.&#8217;s counterextremism program, after concerns about his fixation on violence, including school shootings and mass casualty attacks.<\/p>\n<p>But the inquiry found a lack of clarity over whether Prevent should handle individuals like him \u2014 those with a fascination with violence but no fixed ideology \u2014 and concluded that it was &#8220;simply the wrong decision&#8221; not to pursue further action in his case.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most striking examples of failure came just days before the attack. Rudakubana had been under the care of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services for five years. both between and within institutions.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, escalating warning signs were underestimated, and opportunities to intervene were missed.<\/p>\n<p>The report is also critical of the attacker&#8217;s family, saying they &#8220;created significant obstructions to constructive engagement&#8221; he said. &#8220;Increasingly, what we&#8217;re seeing \u2014 particularly in much younger demographics \u2014 are people who have absorbed a lot of extreme ideas online.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They don&#8217;t necessarily follow any particular ideology or conspiracy theory,&#8221;
