But there are some things Americans would be comfortable having <span class=\"link\">AI<\/span> do for them \u2014 and plenty of others they aren&#8217;t, recent CBS News polling found.<\/p>\n<p>Given a list, the sorts of things Americans are comfortable with AI doing tend to be impersonal or even boring tasks, as well as those that less directly impact them, like <span class=\"link\">proofreading or searching online<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But they&#8217;re less comfortable with AI doing things that have more immediate and perhaps more consequential impact on them: Making <span class=\"link\">medical diagnoses<\/span>, doing their taxes, handling their finances or driving their taxis.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-original\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/26\/e1a6103e-eddb-44e2-b51b-18d304caeaa3\/ai-comfort-vert.png#\" alt=\"ai-comfort-vert.png \" width=\"867\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/26\/e1a6103e-eddb-44e2-b51b-18d304caeaa3\/ai-comfort-vert.png 1x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\"\/><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It is newer technology, but there are only slight differences by age on these views.<\/p>\n<p>If we look closer at the differences between expressed comfort and discomfort, for some of those items (for which a majority are uncomfortable) the difference is dramatic.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-original\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/26\/d50aba7b-4374-43ac-8049-ae68c333b887\/ai-comfort-compare.png#\" alt=\"ai-comfort-compare.png \" width=\"867\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/26\/d50aba7b-4374-43ac-8049-ae68c333b887\/ai-comfort-compare.png 1x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\"\/><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In any case, big majorities believe AI is going to <span class=\"link\">reduce the number of jobs<\/span> available in the U.S.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-original\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/26\/89bb7b72-9968-42ae-9eef-d78a5efd06c0\/ai-impact-on-jobs.png#\" alt=\"ai-impact-on-jobs.png \" width=\"867\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/26\/89bb7b72-9968-42ae-9eef-d78a5efd06c0\/ai-impact-on-jobs.png 1x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\"\/><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More generally, Americans don&#8217;t have much confidence that AI companies will ensure AI will be used in appropriate ways.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-original\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/26\/a008fd23-4efa-442a-a745-3d574c4fc558\/ai-companies.png#\" alt=\"ai-companies.png \" width=\"867\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/26\/a008fd23-4efa-442a-a745-3d574c4fc558\/ai-companies.png 1x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\"\/><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Americans, themselves, report using it more compared to last year. A majority of Americans now say they use AI for something \u2014 mostly for their own use and not at work. The reported increase in use spans age, education and racial groups.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-original\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/26\/e7eb9dd2-9b95-4488-9882-e7de9a013dc3\/ai-use-it.png#\" alt=\"ai-use-it.png \" width=\"867\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/26\/e7eb9dd2-9b95-4488-9882-e7de9a013dc3\/ai-use-it.png 1x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\"\/><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thinking about the government&#8217;s role, more continue to feel that government policy ought to be to restrict the use of AI, not to promote it. (This perhaps naturally follows from the views on job impact. The sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide according to gender, age, race, and education, based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as 2024 presidential vote.
