Patrice Evra has criticised fellow Manchester United legend Paul Scholes over an \u2018unnecessary\u2019 comment he made about caretaker manager Michael Carrick.<\/p>\n

Carrick enjoyed a fantastic start to his time in charge of United, winning seven of his first eight games and taking the Red Devils back into the Champions League places.<\/p>\n

Carrick\u2019s tenure hit its first stumbling block last week as Manchester United were beaten by ten-man Newcastle United at St James\u2019 Park.<\/p>\n

Following that setback Scholes appeared to take a swipe at Carrick, who has emerged as the favourite for the Manchester United job since Ruben Amorim was sacked in January.<\/p>\n

Taking to Instagram, Scholes said: \u2018Michael has definitely got something special about him\u2026 cos Utd have been crap last 4 games\u2026 night.\u2019<\/p>\n

Scholes later deleted the post but Evra was nevertheless disappointed by his former teammate over his \u2018unnecessary\u2019 dig.<\/p>\n

\u2018I hope Paul Scholes\u2019 Instagram story is fake, I hope he was hacked,\u2019 Evra told Stake. \u2018To be honest, I\u2019m not surprised at that from Scholesy.<\/p>\n

\u2018He was the quietest player I\u2019ve ever played with in my entire career. Now, in the media, he drops bombshells.<\/p>\n

\u2018I really don\u2019t understand the lack of support behind Michael Carrick, he\u2019s one of us and he\u2019s doing very well. There\u2019s been negative analysis from Scholesy, but also from Roy Keane and Gary Neville.<\/p>\n

\u2018It annoys me because we want to be in the top four, and those comments are unnecessary, but this is what you do when you work in TV. You can\u2019t be positive, you have to be negative.<\/p>\n

\u2018Michael Carrick\u2019s record is seven games, one draw and one loss. That\u2019s the situation right now.<\/p>\n

\u2018Now Manchester United need to win their next game so they don\u2019t let that noise get to them, from the outside and from ex-players.<\/p>\n

\u2018Carrick is the man of the moment and has done really well. We should be behind him and support him.\u2019<\/p>\n

Turning his attentions to Gary Neville, who has repeatedly suggested Manchester United should overlook Carrick, Evra added: \u2018Most of these guys get a managerial job and get fired straightaway.<\/p>\n

\u2018I said to Neville: \u201cIt\u2019s easy to talk on TV. When you were at Valencia, they asked you for paella, and you gave them fish and chips.\u201d After three months, they said goodbye.<\/p>\n

\u2018People can\u2019t forget what they have done as a manager. As players, they\u2019re legends, but as managers, they haven\u2019t done a great job.<\/p>\n

\u2018So for them to speak and possibly kill the career of a manager, it\u2019s a little bit too much.\u2019<\/p>\n

Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer, meanwhile, says he was \u2018surprised\u2019 by Scholes taking aim at Manchester United caretaker boss Carrick.<\/p>\n

\u2018Did Paul Scholes say something along the lines of United being really poor in some games? I mean, they might have been poor, but they\u2019ve been getting the results,\u2019 Shearer told Betfair.<\/p>\n

\u2018I guess when you play like that the other night, and they didn\u2019t play well, you\u2019re going to get criticised.<\/p>\n

\u2018I don\u2019t know if there\u2019s a friendship between Scholes and Carrick, I guess when they\u2019ve been former teammates and guys who have been fighting together on the pitch then it probably is a bit surprising that an ex-teammate would say that against you.<\/p>\n

\u2018But, we know how the world works now, I don\u2019t suspect that would upset Michael that much.\u2019<\/p>\n

Manchester United will look to return to winning ways next Sunday when top-four rivals Aston Villa visit Old Trafford.<\/p>\n
