Those sensors recorded images at only 640 by 480 pixels, a resolution that already felt modest next to the improving phone cameras of the period. Accessory maker Nyko later decided the outer camera deserved an 8x optical magnification lens anyway, packaged with a hard-shell case that wrapped the original DSi body.

Users placed the textured case over the handheld for some basic protection and a tighter grip, just what you needed for a long gaming session. The detachable lens was then attached onto a corresponding port on the outside of the external camera, with no batteries or electronics required; it simply bent the light to focus it. You’d twist a ring on the barrel to manually focus on objects three meters or further away, and the kit occasionally included a few colorful filters to experiment with. When not in use, the lens stowed in its own protective case. The entire package cost $24.99 back in late 2009, just after the DSi system was modified to allow users to submit photographs directly to Facebook.

Critics quickly pointed out how impractical everything was. The lens had a fixed magnification, so you received a giant zoomed-in image – but only at a fixed place; it wasn’t like a real zoom, more like a big ol magnifying glass. The sensor was still only 0.3 megapixels, which meant that while it would make a difference in some scenarios, images would still be poor quality, especially on the DSi’s small screen.

You’d struggle to get it just right in daytime, and screens would be glare-filled most of the time. Let’s be honest, that big old lens made the DSi appear like a clumsy elephant in your pocket, tempting folks to just walk closer instead. Nyko tried to aid out with a separate flash that plugged into the charge connector, as well as an SD card with a reader, in another attempt to suck some more life out of this camera.

Years later, YouTuber Gavff revisited the Nyko Zoom Case and demonstrated that with proper use, you might obtain some pretty good results. Even went one step further and added a larger lens, resulting in a picture of the moon without the need for any fancy software to fill in the gaps. This just goes to demonstrate that the weird consumer camera from 2009 still has a lot of untapped potential.
[Source]

Nyko Zoom Case Added an 8x Optical Lens to Nintendo DSi Handhelds

#Nyko #Zoom #Case #Added #Optical #Lens #Nintendo #DSi #Handhelds

Released in November 2008, Nintendo’s DSi arrived with a pair of cameras that no previous…

[8
167,2560,14497,10575,6346,2233,14938,1651,1652
post-24765","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech","tag-added","tag-case","tag-dsi","tag-handhelds","tag-lens","tag-nintendo","tag-nyko","tag-optical","tag-zoom
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nyko-zoom-case-nintendo-dsi-accessory.jpg",960,640,false
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nyko-zoom-case-nintendo-dsi-accessory-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nyko-zoom-case-nintendo-dsi-accessory-300x200.jpg",300,200,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nyko-zoom-case-nintendo-dsi-accessory-768x512.jpg",640,427,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nyko-zoom-case-nintendo-dsi-accessory.jpg",640,427,false],"1536x1536":["https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nyko-zoom-case-nintendo-dsi-accessory.jpg",960,640,false],"2048x2048":["https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nyko-zoom-case-nintendo-dsi-accessory.jpg",960,640,false
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nyko-zoom-case-nintendo-dsi-accessory.jpg",960,640,false
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nyko-zoom-case-nintendo-dsi-accessory-540x340.jpg",540,340,true
["GET
