The rover will also carry a high-performance computer made by HPE that will be the first to run LLMs on the moon\u2019s surface. Such software could ultimately help enable greater autonomy and real-time intelligent decision-making in space on future missions, eliminating the time delays and limited bandwidth that often plague long-distance communications between ground control on Earth and robots elsewhere in the solar system.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe time delay, for example, on Mars can be up to 20 minutes,\u201d Mark Fernandez, the chief scientist and principal investigator at HPE, said during a press conference introducing the project. \u201cOn the moon it\u2019s reduced, but still, you are looking at stale data. In fact, the Soviets lost two rovers in the past because of operator errors caused by the time delay.\u201d<\/p>\n
During FLIP\u2019s mission, specialized custom-built LLMs will run a series of experiments to prove that the technology can operate reliably in the extreme environment of the moon. They will analyze data from the onboard cameras and the lidar mapper to aid with safe navigation in the lunar terrain and distill insights it gleans from the gathered data, reducing the amount of information the rover needs to transmit back home.<\/p>\n
China\u2019s Chang\u2019e-6 rover, which landed on the far side of the moon in 2024, used basic AI algorithms and neural networks for autonomous navigation. Similarly, NASA\u2019s Mars rovers Curiosity and Perseverance have been driving semiautonomously using pre-programmed paths for years, but the space-hardened computer brains these rovers rely on are remarkably weak, comparable to late 1990s laptops. FLIP\u2019s HPE Spaceborne-4 edge computer, on the other hand, consists of a high-performance 64-bit CPU combined with a GPU that can run large numbers of computational tasks in parallel, just like advanced edge computers on Earth.<\/p>\n
HPE has previously sent three Spaceborne computers to the International Space Station to test the technology in the milder and more controlled environment of low Earth orbit. The Spaceborne-2 and Spaceborne-3 computers, launched in 2021 and 2024, respectively, ran Meta\u2019s Llama 3.2 LLM aboard the ISS as part of the \u201cSpace Llama\u201d initiative in 2025, helping astronauts to streamline research tasks and speed up crew\u2019s decision-making.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAs humans we have our physical limitations, especially in environments like space,\u201d Francisco Cordova, the chief operating officer for the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory, said during the press conference. \u201cAs we venture further and further out into space, I believe that we\u2019re going to rely more on AI for space exploration, for making smarter and better decisions, but more importantly, working in those environments where humans simply cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead of spending years going through the standard process of creating specialized space-hardened hardware, HPE used software that monitors the system and detects upsets caused by charged cosmic particles. When radiation spikes, the software can lower the computer\u2019s power and speed to reduce risk to the electronics, ensuring\u00a0that the system remains reliable for extensive periods of time.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn space, we don\u2019t have the redundancy, we don\u2019t have the repairman, we don\u2019t have the spare parts,\u201d Fernandez said, \u201cso we spent a lot of time, a lot of CPU cycles, checking everything out and making sure that everything is working out right.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
