DamnationX is a fan project built on top of DevilutionX, the long-running open-source port that already lets people run the original 1996 Diablo on modern computers with higher frame rates, controller support, and other practical fixes. Ray-traced lighting has provided far more dynamic illumination throughout the dungeons and town than the old engine ever could, and it is a true game changer. Desktop builds now only support Apple Silicon Macs, as they require macOS 26 or higher to function. We\u2019ve also been working hard on the recent beta releases to improve frame rates and reduce stuttering, and we\u2019ve finally been able to move some of the floor rendering and lighting computations to the GPU, which has made a significant difference with the high definition pack enabled.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.techeblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/10105453\/damnationx-diablo-1-fan-remake-2.jpg\" alt=\"DamnationX Diablo 1 Fan Remake\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><br \/>We\u2019ve already received reports that the new textures are making character models look a lot nicer, but some of the environments are still a little rough, and bugs are still a real possibility at this point, but DamnationX is still completely free from the GitHub releases page, with the caveat that it\u2019s not affiliated with or endorsed by Blizzard in any way.
