On August 30, 2026, at 9:56 a.m. local Mars time, the rover reached its 5,000th sol, a Martian day that runs about 39 minutes longer than one on Earth. Parked on a sandy ridge the team calls Chocolatal, in the lower foothills of Mount Sharp, it turned its black-and-white navigation cameras on the slope below and took the first half of what NASA later released as a postcard.

Three sols later, on September 2 at 5:39 p.m., the same cameras conducted another sweep of the same ground on a warm late afternoon. When both batches returned to Earth, image scientists overlaid them and added a trick by coloring the morning frames blue and the afternoon frames yellow. It’s a way to add depth later, so the blue is for morning and the yellow is for afternoon, and it works fairly well even after a few attempts. NASA has done this before, as seen by the postcard they created in November 2021, which still appears to be a single picture captured at two hours in the day.

LEGO Technic NASA Mars Rover Perseverance Building Toys – STEM Model Kit for Boys & Girls, Ages 10+ Years…

Feed a passion for science and technology – Kids can learn more about the challenges of space exploration with this LEGO Technic NASA Mars Rover…

Conduct a test flight – This advanced building kit for kids ages 10 and up includes a buildable toy version of NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter, which…

AR brings the mission to life – The accompanying augmented reality app experience lets kids dive into the details of the rover and its mission

Chocolatal is located halfway up a mountain that rises almost three miles above the floor of Gale Crater. The view from the ridge is downhill, over dusty wheel tracks that dissolve into the sand and descend to the crater floor. The crater’s rim seems low toward the horizon, hardly visible. The rover is in the foreground, with a can-shaped UHF antenna in the center of the frame that helps send data back to the orbiting spacecraft, and the finned Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator in the back, which has kept the thing running since it landed on August 6, 2012.

Over 5,000 sols have elapsed, representing more than 14 years on Earth and around 5,137 Earth days. In that time, the Curiosity rover has drove around 23 miles, all within a single crater, climbed from the floor up into the foothills of Mount Sharp around 2014, and spent years moving through the layers of rock that tell the narrative of an older, wetter Mars. These navigation cameras were utilized to photograph this postcard since they are the rover’s everyday eyes for driving and are separate from the color camera, which is used for any closeup science images. Despite being “everyday” cameras, they were able to capture a view of the rover itself, its course, and the slope it has been measuring incrementally over time.

JPL built the rover, and they continue to manage it for NASA’s Science Mission Director. Caltech manages the lab in Pasadena where all of the technicians work. The original objective was to determine whether Gale Crater had the necessary circumstances for microbial life to exist. A colored merge of two black-and-white panoramas sits beside that longer job, showing a nuclear-powered rover still parked on a ridge with a name, still sending its tracks and its antenna home after a milestone that, back in 2012, sat well past the planned life of the mission.
[Source]

Curiosity Marks Five Thousand Martian Days With a Postcard From Chocolatal

#Curiosity #Marks #Thousand #Martian #Days #Postcard #Chocolatal

[8
14464,351,1740,5385,911,14463,6470
post-23512","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech","tag-chocolatal","tag-curiosity","tag-days","tag-marks","tag-martian","tag-postcard","tag-thousand
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nasa-curiosity-rover-5000th-day-on-mars-postcard-chocolatal.jpg",1280,1280,false
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nasa-curiosity-rover-5000th-day-on-mars-postcard-chocolatal-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nasa-curiosity-rover-5000th-day-on-mars-postcard-chocolatal-300x300.jpg",300,300,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nasa-curiosity-rover-5000th-day-on-mars-postcard-chocolatal-768x768.jpg",640,640,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nasa-curiosity-rover-5000th-day-on-mars-postcard-chocolatal-1024x1024.jpg",640,640,true],"1536x1536":["https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nasa-curiosity-rover-5000th-day-on-mars-postcard-chocolatal.jpg",1280,1280,false],"2048x2048":["https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nasa-curiosity-rover-5000th-day-on-mars-postcard-chocolatal.jpg",1280,1280,false
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nasa-curiosity-rover-5000th-day-on-mars-postcard-chocolatal-1024x1024.jpg",1024,1024,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/nasa-curiosity-rover-5000th-day-on-mars-postcard-chocolatal-540x340.jpg",540,340,true
["GET
