That\u2019s a concept he\u2019s been working on ever since, resulting in the beautiful kinetic sculpture known as the Light Herder. This enabled the operator to ensure that the patterns stayed visible in a small area before fading to white or becoming completely black. A few Panasonic high-definition monitors from 2020 featured separate analog control boxes. Blair had to stretch the cords so he could change the knobs while moving the camera around; in retrospect, he hadn\u2019t been too concerned about the newer 4K TVs. Years later, he said this on camera, and Austin White of a Thousand Oaks repair company picked it up. White was astute enough to devise a system that employs a microcontroller to read the real knobs (which are simply old-fashioned potentiometers) and communicates the results to the 4K screens via RS232. Between the monitors, there are a pair of sheets of half-mirrored teleprompter glass sloping at 45 degrees, which effectively mashes the two images together, similar to the old Pepper\u2019s Ghost gimmick used in theaters. He also has Blackmagic 4K switchers and Lynx Technik delay boxes right in the signal line, allowing the operator to \u2018turn off\u2019 an external image or just slow down the way each copy degrades. The entire ensemble is tied together by some stunning maple and mahogany frames. To cap it off, Blair has built foot pedals and finger switches, allowing him to switch inputs without taking his hands off the knobs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.techeblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/26004819\/dave-blair-4k-analog-video-feedback-device-2.jpg\" alt=\"Dave Blair 4K Anlog Video Feedback Device\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><br \/>Blair views the whole system as a musical instrument. When he moves the camera forwards or backward, the size of the recursion changes; when he turns the camera, the entire geometry changes. Every tiny tweak of the knobs on any of the five screens simply sends waves of color and brightness cascading across every copy that follows. The results resemble galaxies, cell walls, DNA helices, ferns, jellyfish, and Sierpi\u0144ski triangles, all at once and never the same twice. Then there was the time he started feeding the two main monitor structures back into each other at the same time, resulting in a duplicate of each, which he refers to as Insanity Mode.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.techeblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/26004822\/dave-blair-4k-analog-video-feedback-device-3.jpg\" alt=\"Dave Blair 4K Anlog Video Feedback Device\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><br \/>Switching to an outside view and then back to the camera locks that first frame in place, and it simply continues continuing, twisting, bending, and contorting with each pass until it\u2019s virtually unrecognizable. He\u2019s used this technique to create some really weird pictures, paintings, live fish tanks, and even a logo of a guy playing a tuba, and it\u2019s simply good old-fashioned physics as well as light doing their thing.
