It\u2019s a surgical robot that inserts those threads into the motor cortex, the area of the brain that determines how to move your body. When a test participant thinks about moving, neurons in the surrounding area fire up. The implant then records what is happening in real time, and this is where things become really fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>\nA machine learning model translates all of this brain activity into a computer cursor that moves around the screen, up, down, left, and right. That pointer lives in a special program, which displays a live video feed of the way ahead as seen by a camera mounted on the guy\u2019s wheelchair. The more you push it to the side, the faster it goes, and releasing it simply slows it down and coasts it back to the center, causing it to stop going on its own rather than barreling out of control.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.techeblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/23204856\/neuralink-mind-controlled-wheelchair-1.jpg\" alt=\"Neuralink Mind-Controlled Wheelchair\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><br \/>Now, the custom chips and electronics that power this machine translate those cursor commands into signals that a standard wheelchair can recognize. Everything, from the drive motors to the seat and back, responds to brain activity without issue. According to one demo participant, the motion was first jerky but became more automatic after a few minutes.
