The sequence, built from photographs taken over a month, shows Mars as a narrow dazzling crescent that expands and recedes behind the craft. Sunlight scattering through the dusty landscape led the crescent edges to shimmer and spread wider than intended, giving spectators a unique perspective rarely seen in missions.

That gravity assist accelerated Psyche to over 1,000 miles per hour and altered its orbital plane by around one degree relative to the sun, just what the navigation team had hoped for after years of rigorous planning. Psyche was initially supposed to shoot out of Mars and head straight for the metal-rich asteroid that bears its name, and even with the gravity boost, it’s still on pace to arrive by summer 29, thanks to that well-timed pass and a decade of very exact planning on the side of the scientists. According to project manager Bob Mase, the team completed the trajectory and Psyche is in excellent condition, ready to restart its solar-electric propulsion system this fall.

LEGO Technic NASA Mars Rover Perseverance Building Toys – STEM Model Kit for Boys & Girls, Ages 10+ Years…

Feed a passion for science and technology – Kids can learn more about the challenges of space exploration with this LEGO Technic NASA Mars Rover…

Conduct a test flight – This advanced building kit for kids ages 10 and up includes a buildable toy version of NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter, which…

AR brings the mission to life – The accompanying augmented reality app experience lets kids dive into the details of the rover and its mission

While the gravity assist was the main event, Psyche was also able to use Mars as a real-world test bed for the research package. The flyby allowed the science team to test each piece of equipment independently, with Mars serving as a stand-in for the asteroid. Psyche’s multispectral imager, a pair of cameras that will one day be used to map the asteroids’ surfaces in a variety of light wavelengths, emitted thousands of frames in all directions. Close-up photos revealed some fairly remarkable stuff: windblown craters, the south polar ice cap that looked dazzlingly clean, and the massive Huygens crater with its twin rings. That same camera also detected the smaller moons Phobos and Deimos from a distance, providing the crew with a useful practice run before attempting to identify any minor moons orbiting the Psyche asteroid.

Jim Bell, the imager head at Arizona State University, was impressed with the camera’s performance and the photos it produced, many of which were unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. Teams are currently reviewing those frames and comparing them to data from orbiters and rovers parked on Mars in order to fine-tune the calibration and determine how the cameras handle all of that dispersed light, and so far it’s been a beneficial exercise.

The magnetometer, which has been measuring the magnetic field of the solar wind since 2023, achieved success when Psyche passed through the zone where the solar wind collides with Mars’ magnetic field. It produced a strong reading, comparable to the planet’s bow shock, which is actually fairly significant. Ben Weiss, MIT’s magnetometry lead, says the data they received was exactly what they needed to test the device in harsh conditions and provided an exciting peek into the mechanics of planetary magnetism in operation.

Psyche’s Mars Flyby Delivers Rare Crescent Time-Lapse and Solid Instrument Checks

#Psyches #Mars #Flyby #Delivers #Rare #Crescent #TimeLapse #Solid #Instrument #Checks

NASA has just released a time-lapse video of the Psyche spacecraft approaching Mars, passing within…

[8
6082,12019,544,12018,12021,353,12017,686,2328,12020
post-17830","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech","tag-checks","tag-crescent","tag-delivers","tag-flyby","tag-instrument","tag-mars","tag-psyches","tag-rare","tag-solid","tag-timelapse
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/nasa-psyche-spacecraft-mars-flyby-time-lapse.jpg",1280,1280,false
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/nasa-psyche-spacecraft-mars-flyby-time-lapse-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/nasa-psyche-spacecraft-mars-flyby-time-lapse-300x300.jpg",300,300,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/nasa-psyche-spacecraft-mars-flyby-time-lapse-768x768.jpg",640,640,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/nasa-psyche-spacecraft-mars-flyby-time-lapse-1024x1024.jpg",640,640,true],"1536x1536":["https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/nasa-psyche-spacecraft-mars-flyby-time-lapse.jpg",1280,1280,false],"2048x2048":["https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/nasa-psyche-spacecraft-mars-flyby-time-lapse.jpg",1280,1280,false
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/nasa-psyche-spacecraft-mars-flyby-time-lapse-1024x1024.jpg",1024,1024,true
https://news678.top/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/nasa-psyche-spacecraft-mars-flyby-time-lapse-540x340.jpg",540,340,true
["GET
