{"id":14150,"date":"2026-06-17T23:55:29","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T23:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news678.top\/?p=14150"},"modified":"2026-06-17T23:55:29","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T23:55:29","slug":"people-fleeing-conflict-in-congo-complicate-efforts-to-stop-ebola-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news678.top\/?p=14150","title":{"rendered":"People fleeing conflict in Congo complicate efforts to stop Ebola outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><em>DRC-Congo border \u2014<\/em>\u00a0Even at the epicenter of the <span class=\"link\">deadly, growing Ebola outbreak<\/span> in the Democratic Republic of Congo, aid worker Jean Marie Lipe often finds it hard to convince people the virus is real.<\/p>\n<p>Grandmother Passy Nzali, among tens of thousands of people displaced from their homes by the long simmering <span class=\"link\">conflict in her country<\/span>, said after attending an information session with Lipe that she now understands bats and chimpanzees can carry Ebola \u2014 and to avoid touching them even when they&#8217;re dead.<\/p>\n<p>But many Congolese still believe the deadly virus is something other than real \u2014 ranging from a mystical curse to a Western conspiracy \u2014 and that continues to complicate the jobs of health workers trying desperately to stop its spread.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The total number of confirmed cases continues to surge, now over the 800 mark since this outbreak was declared on May 15, drawing a dire warning from the head of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we don&#8217;t stop this outbreak very soon, it will be even worse than what we had in West Africa,&#8221;said Africa CDC Director Jean Kaseya.<\/p>\n<p>More than 11,000 people died and more than 23,000 were infected in West Africa&#8217;s Ebola crisis from 2014 to 2016 \u2014 the worst outbreak in recorded history since the virus was discovered 50 years ago, in 1976.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Camps like the one where Nzali has found refuge near the Congo-Uganda border are packed with thousands of people fleeing conflict \u2014 making the sites potential hotspots for the spread of infectious diseases, including Ebola.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/06\/17\/71be56b8-83e0-418e-84b5-ff3b893e3814\/thumbnail\/620x413g8\/7739d423debf04c2040b1505d3a8af1d\/gettyimages-2277941791.jpg#\" alt=\"DRCONGO-HEALTH-EBOLA \" height=\"413\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/06\/17\/71be56b8-83e0-418e-84b5-ff3b893e3814\/thumbnail\/620x413g8\/7739d423debf04c2040b1505d3a8af1d\/gettyimages-2277941791.jpg 1x, https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/06\/17\/71be56b8-83e0-418e-84b5-ff3b893e3814\/thumbnail\/1240x826g8\/6eb191f63423001ef3dcc348bb0069f6\/gettyimages-2277941791.jpg 2x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">A view of the Kigonze camp for internally displaced persons in Bunia, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, on May 28, 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Glody MURHABAZI \/ AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The same anxieties play on the minds of health officials in Uganda, where CBS News visited a quarantine site for refugees who recently fled from the Congo.<\/p>\n<p>James Peter was the most recent and only new arrival, now a week into solo quarantine. No TV, no radio, just a bed and the breeze. We spoke to him through barbed wire. He was set to be locked down in a house under quarantine measures for a total of 21 days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He spoke to us from a safe distance, saying he fled his hometown of Goma after anti-government forces raided the city.
