Annabel Croft criticised some of the more partisan fans at Queen’s as Emma Raducanu was beaten by Donna Vekic in a dramatic final.<\/p>\n

Raducanu declared herself ‘back and better’ after winning two games on Saturday to reach her first grass-court final.<\/p>\n

But a long-awaited title continued to evade the British number one, who was beaten 6-0 7-6 by Croatia’s Vekic in a turbulent final.<\/p>\n

Raducanu looked set to be on the receiving end of an embarrassing scoreline as Vekic took the first set without dropping a game in a little over half an hour.<\/p>\n

The former US Open champion looked increasingly rattled during the opening set, at one point clashing with her coaching team and urging them to be more vocal between points.<\/p>\n

Former British number one and BBC pundit Croft was unhappy with some of the noise between points as fans in the Andy Murray Arena tried to support Raducanu.<\/p>\n

Some fans, desperate to support a struggling Raducanu, cheered when Vekic served a double-fault early on, with similar reactions heard when the 29-year-old made unforced errors.<\/p>\n

‘Well\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not sure they should be clapping the double fault,’ Croft said on BBC’s coverage before adding: ‘That\u2019s\u00a0a bit\u00a0overenthusiastic.’<\/p>\n

At one point in the second set a loud yell rang out in response to what looked to be a Raducanu winner but Vekic returned the ball.<\/p>\n

‘A bit of an overenthusiastic crowd member thought the point was over before it was there,’ Croft said. ‘I\u2019m not sure if that came from Raducanu’s camp, I don\u2019t think so.’<\/p>\n

Fans inside the Andy Murray Arena sensed an incredible comeback when Raducanu broke the Vekic serve early in the second set.<\/p>\n

But Raducanu was twice broken herself when serving for the set and blew a 5-2 lead to lose a tense tie-break.<\/p>\n

Assessing Raducanu’s Queen’s campaign as a whole, Croft said: ‘Emma should be extremely proud of what she has turned around in her season here at the Queen’s Club this week.<\/p>\n

‘She came so close to taking it into a final set and she’s reignited the form that saw her win the US Open.<\/p>\n

‘It’s going to give her a lot of confidence and a really good springboard going into Wimbledon. She certainly looks way better than she did three months ago.<\/p>\n

‘We’ve seen evidence of why people are so excited about her tennis again.’<\/p>\n

Raducanu, meanwhile, described her Queen’s campaign as ‘incredible’ as she came close to winning her first title since 2021.<\/p>\n

‘It’s been an incredible week for me, making the final here, playing in my home city, in my home tournament,’ the world No. 42 said after receiving her runners-up trophy.<\/p>\n

‘The support I have received all week has been incredible but I really want to take this opportunity to thank everyone.<\/p>\n

‘Today was a really tough match. Donna played extremely well from the start to the finish.<\/p>\n

‘So thanks for getting me through some tough moment this week and also for helping me push back in that second set.’<\/p>\n

On her opponent, Raducanu added: ‘What a week for you, from qualifying all the way to the title. You played really well so all the best.’<\/p>\n

Vekic, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, lost in Queen’s qualifying but was given a ‘lucky loser’ route into the final after Marta Kostyuk withdrew through injury.<\/p>\n

‘Wow, first of all congrats Emma on such a great week,’ the new Queen’s champion said. ‘You are such an incredible player and I wish you and your team all of the best for the remainder of the grass season.<\/p>\n

‘Growing up and watching the tour I was always jealous of the boys having a chance to play at this amazing club.<\/p>\n

‘I am very grateful that since last year we have had the opportunity to play here as well. Thank you to everyone who made this happen, we really enjoy it.’<\/p>\n
