An Irish former soldier was jailed for 15 months on Friday for joining the so-called Islamic State (IS) group in Syria, despite appeals for leniency.<\/p>\n

Judge Tony Hunt said Lisa Smith, 40, from Dundalk on Ireland’s east coast, was a low risk for reoffending.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
But he said the mother of one, a Muslim convert, went to Syria with her “eyes wide open” and had shown no remorse for her actions.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
She travelled to IS-held territory and may have been “easily led by circumstances and other people” yet had shown resilience to stick with IS “to the bitter end”.<\/p>\n
