{"id":11279,"date":"2026-05-23T13:32:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T13:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news678.top\/?p=11279"},"modified":"2026-05-23T13:32:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T13:32:00","slug":"ebola-kills-3-red-cross-workers-in-the-congo-organization-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news678.top\/?p=11279","title":{"rendered":"Ebola kills 3 Red Cross workers in the Congo, organization says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>The Red Cross announced on Saturday that three volunteers had died in the <span class=\"link\">Democratic Republic of Congo<\/span> after apparently contracting Ebola while on duty there in March.<\/p>\n<p>The central African country has been gripped by an outbreak of the deadly viral disease which the World Health Organization has declared an international public health emergency.<\/p>\n<p>The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said the volunteers were from the DR Congo Red Cross in Ituri, the northeastern province which is the <span class=\"link\">outbreak&#8217;s epicenter<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>They worked for the Mongbwalu branch of the organisation in Djugu territory, Ituri.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Alikana Udumusi Augustin, Sezabo Katanabo and Ajiko Chandiru Viviane are believed to have contracted the Ebola virus on duty, while carrying out dead body management activities on March 27 as part of a humanitarian mission unrelated to Ebola,&#8221; the IFRC said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the time of the intervention, the community was not aware of the Ebola virus disease outbreak, and the outbreak had not yet been identified. It said it remained committed to supporting communities affected by Ebola and to strengthening efforts to respond to the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Craig Spencer, an emergency room physician and public health professor at Brown University who survived Ebola after contracting it while working with Doctors Without Borders in Guinea in 2014, <span class=\"link\">previously told CBS News<\/span> that he was particularly worried about healthcare workers responding to the outbreak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Healthcare workers are the group that I&#8217;m really concerned about because they had very close contact with people when they&#8217;re most contagious, particularly around the time of folks&#8217; death,&#8221; Spencer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ebola is a deadly viral disease spread through direct contact with bodily fluids. It can cause severe bleeding and organ failure.
