Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping<\/span> on a two-day trip to Beijing next week, the Kremlin said Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

During the meeting, Xi and Putin will discuss bilateral relations, economic cooperation and “key international and regional issues,” the Kremlin said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Putin’s trip is scheduled for May 19-20, according to the Kremlin. The trip will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship, the Russian government said. The Kremlin said following the meeting, a joint statement “at the highest level” and several bilateral intergovernmental, interdepartmental, and other documents are expected to be signed.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes less than 24 hours after U.S. President Donald Trump finished his\u00a0own state visit<\/span>\u00a0to China, where he met with Xi to discuss trade and the\u00a0war in Iran<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump touted the success of his visit, saying Chinese officials opened the door<\/span> to new areas of cooperation with the U.S. While there were\u00a0warm words<\/span>\u00a0between the two leaders, concrete agreements have yet to materialize. Some experts told CBS News that the president\u00a0failed to deliver<\/span>\u00a0any breakthrough trade deals during the trip. Wendy Cutler, a former negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, said that “so far, it doesn’t seem like Trump and his team have a lot to show for the visit.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Questions about U.S. aid to Taiwan also lingered after the visit, with Mr. Trump still not having made a decision on whether to move forward with a delayed $14 billion arms sale that Congress approved in January. Leaders from both political parties<\/span> pushed Mr. Trump to support the island territory.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Mr. Trump posted two photos of himself and Xi during the summit on Truth Social, saying it had been “A Great Honor to be with a Leader who is respected by all!” One image shows Mr. Trump and Xi walking on a red carpet in front of saluting service members. The other shows the two world leaders shaking hands.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Relations between China and Russia have deepened in recent years, particularly since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine<\/span> in early 2022 left Moscow shunned on the global stage and heavily reliant on Beijing for trade due to Western sanctions<\/span>.<\/p>\n

When Putin visited China in September 2025, Xi welcomed his counterpart as an\u00a0“old friend.” Putin also addressed Xi as “dear friend.”<\/p>\n

The Russian leader is also scheduled to visit China for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in the city of Shenzhen in November.<\/p>\n
